Although there’s nothing like jetting off for a break, it can be an expensive affair – but one man managed to take a memorable one-day holiday with his friends and got there and back for just £28

A man has been left flabbergasted after discovering he can enjoy a day out abroad for cheaper than travelling to another city in the UK – and shared how his fun trip turned out.

Every now and then we all need a good break in between work stress, personal issues, or an overbooked social calendar that leaves us exhausted. However, splurging on a lavish holiday often seems out of reach for many. You might consider enjoying a day out in the UK – but this isn’t always cheap either.

Josh Kerr, who lives in Manchester, discovered that it is cheaper to fly to another country than getting a 50 minute train to Leeds. Taking to his Instagram page, where he has 242,000 followers, Josh said: “How on earth is it cheaper to fly to another country than get a train up the road?”

Instead of forking out £41 on a train for a day out with his friends, the group decided to spend £28 each on a flight to Dublin and back. “Turns out it’s actually cheaper to fly to Dublin for the day than it is to get a train to Leeds,” added Josh. He is encouraging others to follow in his footsteps.

Josh said: “Of course we decided to go for it.” After catching an early Ryanair flight from Manchester Airport, the group landed in Dublin and their first stop “had to be” the famous Guinness Storehouse. The group were appointed their own tour guide and explored all the floors of the factory before saying “cheers” and enjoying a pint.

Josh added: “Then it was time to go to as many Irish bars as we could before our flight home.” They also stopped at the famous Temple Bar and danced to live music. Josh said: “After a few more Guinness [pints] it was time for us to get back to the airport. And that’s the day out […] I’d definitely recommend doing.”

One individual commented and said they did a similar trip to Belfast. They explained: “I did similar yesterday, flew over to Edinburgh to meet my friends for lunch. 8.10am flight from Belfast and return 5.15pm from Edinburgh. It was cheaper than getting a taxi from Belfast to our local town.”

“Delightful day out,” said another. Another dubbed Josh’s trip as “brilliant” and one other said his idea is “unreal”.
