Recent video footage of a seaside town in the UK has gone viral on social media after a visitor shared there was a ‘different story to be told a few streets back’ from the glamorous seafront

A frustrated tourist has shared a glimpse into a once-thriving British seaside town and said there is a side “they don’t show you”.

TikTok user Double G (@doublegmylife) regularly travels the UK with his family offering his “take on the world” – paying particular attention to the more rundown areas of the country. While his videos are normally tongue-in-cheek, his latest clip provided a more serious insight into the reality of life in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

“This is the side of Great Yarmouth the holiday brochures don’t show you,” Double G began, panning his camera around a street full of boarded-up windows. “Oh my goodness, this is unreal,” he moaned.

“You’re probably used to the glitz and glamour of the Great Yarmouth seafront with all its arcades and casinos and its wonderful pier and amusements,” he explained as he ventured down the famous promenade on a gloomy afternoon.

“But if you walk just a few rows further back from the front, there’s a different story to be told.” Double G emphasised his point by recording footage of seemingly abandoned cafes and independent shops he claimed have been “shut for decades and left to rot”.

Next up, he slammed the “sleazy lap-dancing clubs full of degenerates” and the “decrepit caravans left on every corner” of the town. “There’s a real shortage of housing in the area and people are living in these caravans pitched up at the side of the road,” Double G went on to claim.

Despite this, he closed by declaring that Great Yarmouth is still his “favourite resort” in the UK, and shared a second video – tucking into a meal at the “highest rated fish and chip show the town has to offer.

“Like most seaside towns to be honest, Blackpool, Skegness, Scarborough, Bridlington, Morecambe, Rhyl to name a few,” one TikTok user penned in response to Double G’s review. “Last time I went to Yarmouth I didn’t get out the car and drove to Cromer,” a second added.

A third recalled: “Great Yarmouth used to be lovely had great family holidays there.” And a fourth TikTok user who recently visited, penned: “Just come back from Great Yarmouth been down there for years my autistic grandson and my son both like there it’s just a shame that they’re not putting more investment into the seaside towns.”

Defending the resort town, however, one person explained: “Yarmouth has parts that are run down, like all towns. It also has an amazing beach, the UK’s only surviving Hippodrome, shows on the pier and plenty to keep children occupied. Fish and chips anyone?”

And a another agreed: “I love Great Yarmouth! The beach is lovely and we try to get there at least once a year.”
