School dinners were hit and miss back in the day, but ‘School Cake’ was always a winner in the canteen – now, a baker has shared how you can recreate the nostalgic treat at home

If you’re nostalgic for those school dinner days, you’ll definitely be craving the iconic cake they served up in the canteen.

Sally’s Cake Emporium, known for their divine sweet treat recipes, has shared how to whip up the perfect School Cake for those missing the dessert from their youth. Sally announced she’d top the cake with “the pink icing”, sending waves of anticipation through fans keen to see if it matched their cherished school day memories.

The recipe begins with mixing together 500g of caster sugar with 400g of margarine, followed by adding 10 eggs into the mix. Sally then advises pouring in 120ml of oil – “vegetable oil or sunflower oil” – to keep the cake moist.

Next, stir in 500g of self-raising flour and a couple teaspoons of baking powder. Sally then adds about “eight tablespoons of milk”, telling followers not to “come for” her after she decided to simply eyeball the amount.

Just before placing the cake into a baking tray, Sally added some vanilla extract and then popped it into the oven. She said she would “cook it for about 50 minutes on 180” until it was just right.

She returned the next day to trim the corners and edges before demonstrating how to apply the icing. Using icing sugar mixed with milk – her preference, though she noted “you can use water if you want” – she poured the icing over the cake.

Despite not being “100% happy with it” due to some overflow, the cake still looked mouth-watering. She then topped it off with hundreds and thousands, giving it that classic School Cake feel.

People who saw the video were quick to pile on the praise, saying they “love it” and others commenting they “miss it so much.”

One enthusiastic fan even wrote: “I love old school puddings my favourite was chocolate sponge with chocolate custard.”

However, one commenter noticed that Sally had originally mentioned using pink icing but ended up using white, jokingly writing: “Haha you forgot you said pink on Sunday but done it in White. Looks lovely. I could do a bit of that with my cuppa tea.”

Another fan praised her videos and cakes, while one reassured her that “As long as it tastes good, that’s all that matters.”

Sally, based in Otford, Kent, regularly shares videos of her delicious bakes to her TikTok channel, where she boasts 30.6k followers. She shares she is a small business owner and once even gave a tour of her shop.

The front door was adorned in flowers, and for the festive season it even boasted a wreath. Inside, the shop was decorated with a neon sign and pink features.

“Oh my days I’m [coming] to taste I love watching sally with her creations and love her say it as it is shop looks beautiful [too],” one person commented.
