Prevent mould and mildew forming in your bathroom this winter with this genius 69p hack that stops condensation forming on your windows – and is approved by TV cleaning guru Lynsey Crombie, aka the Queen of Clean
Avoid mould and damp growing in your home with this genius hack.
With freezing temperatures slated to hit parts of the UK in coming days, many households are noticing a chill in their home. Despite soaring energy bills, it’s important to keep the home warm during these periods to avoid frozen pipes and mould spores – which often occur in damp, moist areas like the bathroom.
When hot air and cold air collide, condensation forms – and while this might not seem terrible – it is often the first sign of poor ventilation. If left on your window sills, it won’t be long until mildew and mould will start start to form, which can cause a whole host of nasty symptoms, especially amongst children and those with existing respiratory issues.
TV cleaning guru Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean, swears by using washing-up liquid to deter condensation in the bathroom. “Pop a tiny amount onto a dry microfibre cloth and rub all over the glass pane,” she told her 130,000 followers.
“You won’t get smears as you are using the tiniest amount… This creates a barrier and prevents condensation. [It] is such a brilliant old-school tip that works so well.” You don’t need fancy Fairy washing-up-liquid for this hack (save that for your dirty pots and pans). A cheap bottle of supermarket-brand detergent will work just as well, and can be picked up for as little as 69p.

If you’re still spotting water droplets on the inside of your windows, it might be time to invest in a dehumidifier. Earlier this year, during the savage January weather, swathes of Brits raved about the Blyss Curve Moisture trap.
Priced at £7.50 from B&Q, the mini yet powerful appliance is said to be great for ‘removing excess moisture from the air in medium-sized rooms’. It combats the ‘undesirable consequences’ of high humidity – including condensation, damp, musty smells, wood rot, mould and mildew.
The dehumidifier currently boasts an impressive 4.3 stars out of five – and has a bunch of confidently positive reviews. “Fantastic!” one person raved. “[It’s] great for absorbing any condensation from windows and in the air.” Another pleased buyer hailed: “Works really well! [I] could see a difference straight away,” while a third added: “We have one in the front room and one in a bedroom and the amount of liquid it has collected is crazy.”
