Amazon has finally released a smart free upgrade for one of its popular Kindles.
It’s been a long time coming, but Amazon has finally confirmed the release of a smart free Kindle upgrade. This blockbuster boost brings a swathe of clever features to the latest Scribe model, and if you’ve splashed out on one of these premium e-readers, then it’s definitely worth checking to see if it’s available to download and install.
The latest Scribe arrived in the UK late last year and offers Kindle fans an expansible 10.2-inch 300PPI glare-free display, speedy page turns, a backlight for reading at night and a premium design that ditches plastic for metal. To set it apart from its cheaper siblings, it also includes a neat Pen Pro, which lets you scribble on the screen, make instant notes and write down thoughts as you read the latest bestsellers.
The Scribe is certainly the best Kindle on the market, but it has been missing some must-have features. At launch, those in the USA got a bunch of smart AI upgrades, including the ability to tidy up handwriting and make quick summaries of notes.
Sadly, those features weren’t in the UK. Luckily, that has now changed.
From this month, owners of the new 2024 Scribe will finally be able to use things such as AI-powered notebook summarisation and AI-powered handwriting refinement.
Amazon says it has started rolling out the boost, so keep an eye on your settings if you own this all new model.

AI-powered notebook summarisation
Powered by generative AI, this will allow you to quickly create a synopsis of your notes so you can turn your ideas into actions. When in your notebook, simply click on the AI Icon and then select the “Summarise” feature to automatically convert your notes into concise bullets. The summaries are provided in a script font, so they’re easy to read and share, while ensuring the look and feel of handwritten notes.
AI-powered handwriting refinement
If you’re scribbling in a hurry, or don’t have the tidiest handwriting, you can now turn hand-written notes into four different script fonts for a more elegant look. While you’re in a notebook, just click the AI icon and select “Refine writing” to quickly convert into a script font.
New way to use Active Canvas
You can now take notes in margins, expand them for longer notes, or collapse them to see the original page. To open a margin, use the Pen to tap the icon in the top corner. Then, write as much as you’d like, and tap the icon again to close the margin.
