If you’re an avocado lover, you’ll know how frustrating it can be when you buy one from the supermarket and it’s just not quite ripe enough to eat – but one chef has shared a ‘genius’ hack to fix that

Avocados are a beloved fruit known for their creamy texture and mild nutty flavour when ripe.

However, finding ripe avocados in the supermarket isn’t always guaranteed. They can often be bright green and very hard, making them difficult to slice or mash for salads, sandwiches, or toast. If you find yourself with unripe avocados, there’s a “game-changing” hack that could come in handy.

Food enthusiast @samura_cooking shared a top tip on his TikTok page for ripening avocados using hot water. The video was captioned: “Got a hard avocado, but can’t wait? A genius hack to ripen an avocado fast.

“Try this – put boiling water over it and let it sit go three minutes, then dunk it in cold water to cool. The avocado will soften up, making it super easy to peel and mash to creamy perfection.” For those planning to eat only half an avocado, it’s crucial to know how to prevent the other half from turning brown and mouldy quickly, reports the Express.

To do so, seal the flesh with a sprinkle of lemon juice, lime juice, or olive oil, then tightly wrap it in cling film and refrigerate. If you know you won’t be eating the avocado anytime soon, you can freeze it for later use.

Freezing avocado as a puree is the best method because it ensures the citrus juice will penetrate all of the flesh, keeping it from browning. To use this technique, pop your peeled and stone-free avocados into a blender, add a spoonful of lemon or lime juice, and blend until you’ve got a smooth mixture.

Then, shift the pureed avocado into a freezer bag, making sure to squeeze out all the air. You can then freeze it for as long as five months.
