A lot of people can get confused by the etiquette of tipping while on a cruise, according to one expert who has warned against a big no-no – they have now explained all

If you’re embarking on your maiden voyage or even if you’re a seasoned cruiser, understanding the tipping etiquette on board is crucial.

Phil Evans, the managing director at budget cruise holiday provider Cruise Nation, acknowledges that many passengers find the tipping protocol perplexing. He explains: “If you’ve never cruised before – or even if you have – knowing the ins and outs of tipping can be a bit confusing. You’re probably asking yourself ‘am I expected to tip for everything when I’m onboard?’

“The answer is no, you’re not. Most cruises automatically add gratuities to your account, eliminating the need for you to figure out who gets what – it’s all sorted for you.

“These tips will cover your bar bills, along with spa services, specialty restaurants, and any special requests the crew help you with, so there’s no need to reach into your wallet – unless you want to, of course! You might want to carry some extra cash on you if the service has been particularly exceptional.”

While it’s possible to ask for the automatic gratuity to be removed from your bill, Evans advises against it, labelling it a major faux pas. “Since these amounts play a massive part in the crew’s salary, take it from us – it’s a definite no-no!” he added.

Another big no-no according to cruise expert Ilana Schattauer, also known as Life Well Cruised, is clearing your own plate after the buffet, reports the Express. She insists that plates and cups should be left untouched post-meal.

She explained: “Now, in particular this is at the buffet or any eating area that is self-serving. If you were in a mall or at a buffet that’s in-land, you would normally clear your own plates. However, this is not the case when you’re on a cruise.”

This is due to the specific systems staff have in place to manage food waste. Almost all cruise lines are meticulous about leftovers and other forms of waste, with many utilising biodigesters to reduce their emissions.

If passengers start clearing their own plates, it complicates the waste sorting process for the crew.
