Johnathan Wright, 48, his wife Anna, 45, and their three sons Edward, 18, Ollie, 17, and Alex, 14, jetted off from Luton Airport at 6am to Prague in the Czech Republic

A family splashed out for a speedy central European holiday last less than a day.

In a whirlwind adventure, Johnathan Wright, 48, along with his wife Anna, 45, and their three sons, Edward, 18, Ollie, 17, and Alex, 14, forked out £584 for a lightning tour of Prague, zipping there from Luton Airport as day broke to immerse themselves in the Czech capital.

The intrepid family hit the famed Charles Bridge first thing in the morning, meandered through Prague’s enchanting old town and scaled the heights to the castle for some epic scenic snapshots – all by lunchtime. They even squeezed in a power nap under the sun in a park before diving back into sightseeing; ticking off the iconic clock tower, hopping on a riverboat cruise (with a drink in hand), pampering themselves with some shopping and savouring local delights like chimney cakes, ice cream and a pint of Czech dark beer.

Their sprint through the city culminated with the family catching their return flight at 9.50 pm, landing back in the UK past 11.30 pm but still riding high on their express escapade. Reflecting on the packed day, Kenilworth lawyer Johnathan shared: “We landed at 9am in the morning and got a very cheap bus and train from the airport to the centre.”

Undaunted by the race against time, he added: “We basically tried to jam-pack everything in. We did a river cruise which had a bar on board and did a tour of the city. We landed at 9am in the morning and got a very cheap bus and train from the airport to the centre.

“We basically tried to jam-pack everything in. We did a river cruise which had a bar on board and did a tour of the city. All the buildings look like they are from Disney, they were so beautiful. We had some of the local foods and beer like Staropramen and Budvar which was lovely. I think it is great way of seeing new cities and also you don’t have to spend as much as you would do on a proper holiday.”

However long you are planning to stay in Prague, you’ll find plenty to do there. During a trip, there is no better place to start than the Unesco-listed Old Town Square from where you can take in the historic core of the city. The square is also home to one of Prague’s unique attractions: the Astronomical Clock.

Hordes of people gather around the Old Town Hall once an hour to see the 15th-century marvel chime and display a procession of statues of Death and the apostles. Heading out of the square, venture towards the Vlatava River to discover another of the city’s prominent sights, the Charles Bridge. Every day thousands of visitors walk over the 15th-century crossing, which is jam-packed with street sellers, artists and performers. A slow amble over the bridge allows you spectacular views of Prague Castle and the varied skyline on both sides of the river.
