While a trip to the much-loved holiday destination of Tenerife normally conjures images of heading to the beach or lounging by the pool, the island is being hailed as a great spot for a more active pastime too.

The popular and affordable holiday hotspot, while traditionally famous for its great selection of beaches and brilliant weather, has also been hailed as one of the best places for cycling. The island has been called a ‘cyclists’ paradise’ – it has the perfect climate all year round for people to take to the road on a bike and explore the area, The Express reports.

The wide variety of terrain and landscapes means that cyclists of all abilities can enjoy the area, while professionals often use the steeper volcanic hills for training. The fact that temperatures sit a pleasant 22 to 25 degrees Celsius for most of the year means that for years the island has been a favourite for world tour teams. The reasonable flight time of around four hours from the UK means the island has long been a favourite of UK holidaymakers with activities for the whole family.

If cycling is not your thing, thrill seekers can visit Siam Park. The water park is one of the best in Europe and this top-rated spot won’t disappoint you. One guest on Tripadvisor said: “This was a fantastic day out, there were rides for all, it’s definitely a must when visiting Tenerife.”

If you are after a more laid back trip, there are many beautiful beaches on the island. The soft sands of Playa Las Teresitas stretch for a mile meaning that there is always plenty of room, even in high season. If you prefer to get off the beaten path a little, Playa de Masca is another great beach. You’ll have to take a demanding trek over rugged landscape to see the ocean but it’s worth it for the views.

The warmest weather is from June to September, with August being the hottest month with an average daily maximum of 31 C and an average low of 22 C. However due to the sub tropical climate the sun shines throughout the year and winter months are also popular with visitors looking for some sun.
