A number of drivers have been left confused by a one-word road sign after spotting it on a M11 junction – but others have since joked about what it could actually mean

Motorists have been left scratching their heads over a mysterious one-word motorway sign which sparked an online frenzy.

The sign gained traction after some perceived it as being eerier than your average traffic alert. The spooky electric road sign erected on the M11 baffled drivers, with one Reddit user, Megalodon-5, flagging the sighting to fellow enthusiasts on the r/UKDriving subreddit. They asked: “Just seen this sign on the M11. What does it mean? Never seen it before.”

The cryptic message ignited a flurry of theories as the public jumped in to decipher its significance. While some are now clued-up about the sign’s purpose, saying they are “fine about” its application, there are voices in the crowd who argue the “end” sign crops up all too often.

Delving into explanations, a user revealed: “There was some info such as advisory speed due to traffic or caution due to a warning of debris in the road. End means it’s the end of that warning, but you may only come across the end if you’ve joined in-between, or they’ve forgotten to remove the end after the other ones have been removed.”

Another added: “‘END’ of any restrictions, warnings etc that would have been on a previous matrix board. Smart motorways these might have been a variable speed limit; although that looks as though it could have been a period of roadworks, high winds/fog conditions, congestion etc.”

Yet, amid the puzzlement, some people used the opportunity to craft their own interpretations, with one quipping: “It means you have completed ‘driving in the UK’. And will be returned to the start.”

Another playful comment read: “End of the road.” Motorists zooming along the M11 might have spotted a sign with “End” emblazoned on it which simply means “End of Restriction” signalling the end to any temporary road laws that were in force on the stretch of tarmac they’ve just travelled.
