A Netflix movie branded the ‘dumbest s***’ one user has seen continues to get huge viewing figures despite a string of negative reviews

A movie labelled “the dumbest” and receiving a savagely low Rotten Tomatoes score continues to rake in the views.

Despite an influx of negativity, the Netflix movie has landed almost 27 million views. Uglies, which is based on the 2005 dystopian novel by Scott Westerfield, tells the story of teenager Tally (Joey King) who is living in a world where cosmetic surgery is imposed on 16-year-olds.

When she decides to flee her life, she stumbles into a rebel area known as The Smoke. There, she soon discovers that everything she thought she knew about her life and beauty isn’t exactly is it seems. The production stars Laverne Cox as well as Outer Banks star Chase Stokes.

However, despite the well-known line up, critics were far from impressed. Giving the film a lowly 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans also took to Twitter/X to let out their frustration with the movie.

One user sighed: “I’m sorry but this movie ‘uglies’ on Netflix is the dumbest s*** I’ve seen in a while.” The opinion was echoed by a second who wrote: “Though it supposedly argues against human beings turned into synthetic quasi-droids, Uglies feels like just another throwaway product.”

And a third didn’t hold back either, saying: “I’m sorry but ‘Uglies’ on Netflix is such an unserious movie. I want that time I’ve wasted back!”

A review by Chicago Sun-Times left the movie appearing forgettable with its bland thoughts. “Everything about Uglies is average. Not terrible enough to be campy, not deep or provocative or visually impressive enough to merit further chapters in the story,” the publication penned.

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom, with some viewers enjoying what was on offer. One X user wrote: “Just watched #Uglies on #Netflix I totally enjoyed this sci-fi movie #JoeyKing is a terrific actress. The movie flowed perfectly and I saw at the end that it was directed by #McG If you like action and suspense and sci-fi, this is for you.”

And another offered up more positivity, saying “Probably super unpopular opinion, but I really enjoyed Uglies on Netflix and would love a sequel.”

The potential for a sequel is there with the book series offer up Pretties as potential to be adapted. Netflix is yet to confirm whether a sequel will be announced. However, with figures so high despite poor reviews, it could be a possibility.
