Cold Weather Payments have been activated this week as the mercury plummets to bitterly cold lows – and people living in these postcodes are entitled to it.

Icy temperatures and snow has descended on the UK triggering the activation of Cold Weather Payments for millions. A total of 51 postcode areas will get the extra £25 payment towards heating their homes, including West Yorkshire, including Bradford, Halifax, and Huddersfield, East Lancashire and Burnley. A new interactive map has been released to show people living in specific regions if they are eligible.

The heating benefit is available across England and Wales to people who are already in receipt of one or more benefits. It is believed around 3.9 million people can claim the payment under the Department for Work and Pensions scheme. The payments can be triggered any number of times when the mercury dips to dangerously cold levels. The good news is people don’t need to apply for it – they will automatically see the money if they are receiving a range of benefits.

A statement from the government said: “If you’re eligible to get Cold Weather Payments, you’ll get £25 for each seven day period of very cold weather between November 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025. After each period of very cold weather in your area, you should get a payment within 14 working days. It’s paid into the same bank or building society account as your benefit payments.”

Eligibility criteria

People can claim the financial help if they are receiving the following benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

What to do if you’ve not received your payment

The DWP says there are things you can do if you believe you are entitled to Cold Weather Payments but haven’t received them. “Tell the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus if you think you should have got a Cold Weather Payment but you have not,” it added. “If you’re getting Universal Credit, sign in to your account and add a note to your journal. If you do not have an online account, ring the Universal Credit helpline instead. The phone number is on letters about your Universal Credit claim.”

When payments are affected

Anyone going into hospital when these payments are triggered must tell the pension service or Jobcentre as it may affect payments. This can be done on the online account by adding a note to journals or ringing the Universal Credit helpline.
