England are set to take on Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and Murat Yakin’s stars are valued at just over a quarter what the Three Lions are worth

Granit Xhaka is finally worth his transfer value – eight years after joining Arsenal.

Xhaka, 31, is valued at £38.9m by Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) experts thanks to his “renaissance” at Bayer Leverkusen. Switzerland captain Xhaka joined Arsenal for £33m in 2016 and had mixed fortunes at the Emirtaes but enjoyed a brilliant season after moving to Leverkusen for £21m last summer. Xhaka helped Leverkusen overhaul Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga and is now leading Switzerland into their Euros quarter final with England.

Paul Macdonald, of FootballTransfers.com – who played a key part in developing the ETV algorithm, said: “To say Granit Xhaka has enjoyed an incredible renaissance since leaving Arsenal would be a huge understatement. It almost defies belief. He became something of a lightning rod in London, controversial and almost a laughing stock at times. A year after his exit, he is an ‘invincible’ himself at Bayer Leverkusen and has now helped his country reach the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

“His ETV is bucking all trends – we normally see players flatten or decrease in value after the age of 30, but not Xhaka. He is the only player in our global top 10 of players over 30 who is now at a career peak.

“He is unique, and it is a massive testament to his performance levels. Put simply, he’s finally worth what Arsenal paid for him. Eight years after they bought him, and more importantly a year after he left them…”

The ETV formula values players for their age, performances and contract lengths. They have valued the whole Switzerland squad and picked out their key men.

Yann Sommer (Value: £9.8m)

Inter did amazing goalkeeper business last summer, selling flavour of the month Andre Onana to Manchester United for £42m (we valued him at just £17m) and replacing him with Sommer for just £5.8m. Despite his advancing years (now aged 35), all Sommer did was become the best keeper in Serie A as the Nerazzurri claimed the Scudetto.

Manuel Akanji (Value: £41.5m)

Signing Akanji from Borussia Dortmund for around £15m in the summer of 2022 was a fantastic deal for the all-conquering Manchester City machine. He is now valued at around triple that figure after becoming a key part of Pep Guardiola ’s backline.

Breel Embolo (Value: £11.6m)

Has threatened to become a huge deal at various stages in his career, but as yet it has never quite happened at club level. He’s a different matter at international level though, as a key part of the Swiss attack. Only returned to action just ahead of the Euros after most of his 2023-24 campaign for Monaco was ruined by an ACL injury.

Few would have predicted what came next when Xhaka finally ended a tumultuous stay at Arsenal with a move to Bayer Leverkusen last summer. He was a key part of an unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning season for Xabi Alonso’s terrific side.
