Antony has seen his playing time reduced this season, with his future looking uncertain under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, and now his luck has worsened after being stretchered off against Fenerbahce

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been handed a new injury setback after winger Antony suffered a sprained ankle in their 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce.

Antony has suffered a difficult season and has been used sparingly by Ten Hag, playing just 27 minutes in the Premier League, with his future looking uncertain under the Dutchman.

The Brazilian’s luck continues to take a turn for the worse after being stretchered off against the Turkish outfit towards the end of the Europa League clash – with Ten Hag now set to be without him for the must-win trip to West Ham this weekend.

Antony had only played 16 minutes against Fenerbahce after being subbed on in the 76th minute, but despite the final whistle beckoning in Istanbul, Antony needed medics to come to his aid after going down with a serious looking injury.

Now United have revealed Antony has suffered a sprained ankle, saying it is “not as bad as first feared” but that his return date was unknown.

Ten Hag sympathised with the player after the game ahead of their trip to West Ham on Sunday, saying he had worked hard in training and deserved his introducion against Fenerbahce.

“It’s really unlucky for him,” he stated. “I feel real compassion for him, when he worked so hard in training.

“His training performances are that good that he deserved to come on. When you have to come off so quickly, that is really sad to see. Hopefully, it’s not too bad, we have to wait 24 hours for what the assessment is.”

Antony joined United from Ajax for £85m in 2022 but has struggled to live up to his price tag, playing 87 times and scoring 12 across three seasons.

He has been continually tipped for an exit from Old Trafford and was linked with a loan switch to United’s recent opponents Fenerbahce in the summer.

Antony joins Kobbie Mainoo, Jonny Evans, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire in being sidelined for United as they prepare to travel to West Ham.
