Spain’s party-mad seaside resort of Benidorm attracts millions of sun-worshipping tourists every single year, but things look pretty different when the heavens open up
Love it or loathe it: millions of tourists flock to Benidorm every year. Famed for its beaches, wild nightlife, and strong British presence when it comes to cafes and pubs – the seaside resort is often heaving with sun-worshipping holidaymakers.
Last year, a staggering 2,829,531 holidaymakers last year visited the hotspot, located on the eastern coast of Spain, part of the Valencia region’s iconic Costa Blanca. Here, travellers can enjoy the very best of the Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild winters. “If you’re a sunseeker the best time to visit Benidorm is between June and August,” explains travel firm TUI. “The hottest month of the year is July with an average daily maximum of 32 C and an average low of 22 C [while] the coolest month of the year is December with an average daily maximum of 17 C and an average low of 7 C.
In July, Benidorm’s driest month, there’s only around 1mm of rainfall – whereas March is the wettest month, with 17 mm of rain over two days. When you compare it to the UK, it certainly isn’t bad – but the sight of Benidorm experiencing anything but sun and blue skies can feel a little odd.
Taking to TikTok, user The Benidorm Fanatic showed the usually busy streets of Benidorm looking like a ghost town as the heavens opened up this month. Tourists can be seen seeking shelter from the downpour in a nearby nightclub, while one person with their hood up runs across the street to avoid getting soaked. All of the outdoor seats that would usually be occupied by tourists have been left in the rain.

Swathes of viewers flocked to the comments section to express their shock at the British-like weather. “Oh my God,” one person wrote. “I hope it’s going to stop soon.” Another agreed, commenting: “That’s some rain.” A third added: “Hope the rain clears up soon,” while a fourth joked: “The rain in Spain does not always stay on the plane. Still, way better weather than any place in the UK by a country mile.”
Luckily, many viewers stating they’re currently in Benidorm said the rain only occurred on Saturday, February 1 and has been ‘beautiful’ ever since. The seaside resort is predicted to experience highs of 18C this week, with some cloudy days but little chance of rain. However, with Benidorm’s rainiest month coming up, it might be wise to pack a brolly!
