If you want your green space to be the envy of all your neighbours next spring, these are the gardening jobs you need to be getting on with this October, recommended by an expert
These gardening jobs are essential to tackle this October to guarantee your green space looks stunning come Springtime. Whether you are an absolute novice when it comes to gardening or you are expertly green-fingered, there is plenty to be getting on with in your garden this Autumn to get things ready before the cold, frosty winter months.
Outside spaces come in different shapes and sizes, but even if you are only working with an apartment balcony or a patio on the smaller side, there is still a lot you can do this month that will ensure you are met with stunning blooms in the spring, to help cheer you up after a long, cold winter.
Gardening expert Michael – who runs the TikTok account @themediterraneangardner – which boasts over 250,000 followers, has explained in a video the most important jobs to be getting on with at this time of year, taking you all the way from lawn care to house plant maintenance.
The expert advises that now is the time to plant a series of gorgeous spring bulbs – but whilst you should hold off on planting tulip bulbs just yet, you can get cracking with alliums, hyacinths, crocus, and daffodil bulbs, all of which will provide a much-welcomed pop of colour once spring begins. These can be planted in pots, containers, or your garden borders, but wherever you plant them, “You just need to plant them three times the depth of the bulb,” the expert explains.
If you have any hardy perennials in your outside space, now is the perfect time to collect seeds, Michael explains, and you should also cut back your herbs in October as well. The expert warns that this is the last time of year when you can get on with some serious lawn care, so if your turf is the centrepiece of your garden “you want to aerate, scarify and reseed” it now before it’s too late.
If your outside space features a lot of pots, you will want to consider lifting them up onto feet before we get into the thick of winter – this will allow better drainage for your pots, and ensure that none of your prized plants get waterlogged over the next few months. Equally, if you have any citrus fruit plants in pots, then you should bring them inside altogether, to make sure that they don’t get damaged by the upcoming frosts.
The expert also advises installing a water butt in your garden, so you can make use of the abundance of rain we regularly experience at this time of year, and if you are lucky enough to have a green house you should give it a good clear out at this time of year to ensure as much light as possible gets to the whatever you have growing in there.
When it comes to your house plants, Michael recommends moving them away from windowsills where they might feel the cold this winter and also notes now the temperature is dropping you don’t need to water your inside jungle quite as often. Finally, if you have been looking to invest in some bare-root fruit trees then now is best the time to order them.
