Dr Shireen shared a TikTok video in which she opens up about some of the common “red flag” cancer symptoms that people often miss – and when to really worry about it

Cancer will impact one in two individuals during their lifetime, yet many continue to overlook common symptoms.

Alarmingly, ordinary signs are often dismissed, as people fail to recognise them as cause for concern. Doctor Shireen, a GP who has gained popularity through her informative TikTok videos, is all too familiar with this issue.

In a recent video, she highlighted the typical “red flag” cancer symptoms that are frequently overlooked. However, these are signs which should not be ignored for the sake of one’s health.

In the video, Dr Shireen stated: “There is one cancer where I think patients sit on their symptoms for a little bit too long before they see their GP. Ovarian cancer.

“The symptoms of ovarian cancer are pretty non-specific a lot of the time that means you might think you just have a bit of an upset stomach, you’ve got a bit of indigestion, you’re generally feeling quite tired. You might not necessarily straight away think it’s cancer.

“Other cancers really like to show themselves, and show themselves off like a breast lump or mucus in the poo and changes in the bowel habit. Ovarian cancer doesn’t really do that for us.”

According to Dr Shireen, key symptoms to watch out for include persistent bloating, feeling full soon after eating and a dull, aching pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis. Another subtle indicator is needing to urinate more frequently.

If you consult your GP about any concerns, they will typically begin by performing a physical examination to check for any unusual lumps or masses. A simple blood test may also be conducted to rule out other potential issues.

The test results usually become available within a day or two and, if they come back normal, this can be quite reassuring. However, if anything suspicious is detected, you will be referred for further evaluation.

Dr Shireen emphasised the importance of early detection, urging people to seek medical attention if they have any concerns. She noted ovarian cancer symptoms can be easy to overlook, leading some individuals to “sit on their symptoms” rather than seeking help.

The video has garnered over 9,000 likes and numerous comments, with many viewers sharing their personal experiences.

One commenter revealed: “I literally was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when I was 24. For about four years I was going to the doctors, and they told me I was too young to see a gynaecologist, and that it’s probably my periods.”

Another commenter shared a heartbreaking story, writing: “My sister died age 26 to ovarian cancer. She started showing signs a year before she found out. What it was we just didn’t know.”

Meanwhile, another person chimed in with: “My mum felt bloated for months. Ovarian cancer – she passed away two years later.”
