Liam Payne fans were left in tears following a touching tribute to the One Direction star at the start of the in Memoriam section of the Grammy Awards

Fans of Liam Payne were left in tears after the Grammy Awards paid tribute to the late One Direction star.

The 31-year-old died in October after falling from a balcony of a hotel in Argentina. And the Grammys placed the star at the forefront of their ‘In Memoriam’ section as they recognised musicians who have died in the past year.

The image showed the former 1D man smiling, with fans quickly sharing their heartbreak once again on Twitter/X. The tribute also featured video clips of the star during his days in the iconic boyband.

The footage opened up with Liam standing alongside his bandmates on a rooftop as they overlooked a screaming crowd of fans below. “I never expected any of this to happen,” he said in a featured old audio clip. “You actually sit and think about it – we’ve done some amazing things.”

Alongside music from Chris Martin, Liam was seen posing in front of a graffiti wall and performing onstage during One Direction’s stadium tours. One fan on X, formerly known as Twitter: “I don’t want tributes, I want Liam back. He never deserved this at such a young age.”

Another sobbed: “Not me starting to bawl my eyes out when Liam pops up on the Grammys. Miss you Payno.” A third added: “enjoying the grammys and then getting hit with the liam payne tribute felt like getting hit by a semi truck #GRAMMYs.”

A fourth said:” The in memoriam segment starting with liam payne got me #grammys,” and a fifth added: “The tribute to liam really has me bawling :(( seeing stuff like this and it still just doesn’t even feel real. liam payne forever & always #GRAMMYs”

This year’s Grammy Awards took place once again at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. It marked the 67th annual ceremony of the biggest night in the music industry calendar.

Once more, Trevor Noah was on hand for hosting duties. It was the comedian’s fifth year in a row hosting. Previous years saw him take aim at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following the release of Harry’s memoir, Spare. In 2023, Trevor mocked Harry’s revelation in Spare that he had frostbite on his private parts during a North Pole trip in 2011.

This time around, he was quick to berate Donald Trump. However, his jibes were met with mixed reaction online.

Prior to this year’s awards, Beyonce led the way with the most nominations. In total, she featured in 11 categories. The Cowboy Carter songstress was also a record-breaker before the event even began after becoming the most-nominated female artist in a single year.

As well as Beyonce’s heavy nominations, a string of others were up for seven gongs. This included Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone.

Last year’s big winners included Taylor Swift. The songstress, 35, broke history, becoming as the first artist ever to win Album of the Year four times. This beat a record previously held by Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder.

Miley Cyrus also took home two Grammy Awards out of the six she was nominated for in 2024, marking the first wins since her first nominations in 2015.
