Donald Trump was targeted by Grammys host Trevor Noah in his opening monologue – but his jibe was met with a mixed response
Trevor Noah was back as Grammy host and wasted no time to take digs at a number of famous faces – including Donald Trump.
As he took on his fifth opening monologue in as many years, the comedian jibed: “I don’t know if you noticed there’s been a few changes in Washington. So I’m going to enjoy tonight, because it’s maybe my last time I get to host anything in this country.”
However, his speech – and Trump jibes – were met with mixed reaction before he introduced Billie Eilish to perform. One user on Twitter/X said: Trevor Noah didn’t waste any time taking a jab at President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. #Grammys”
A second said: “he’s so real for that tbh,” while a third said: “Trevor Noah on the Grammys throwing lowblows to Trump,” alongside a string of crying with laughter emoji faces.
But another admitted: “If Donald trump get Trevor Noah banned I won’t be mad.” And another agreed. saying “Bye bye! We need someone better hosting.” Another claimed: “My mother has the Grammys on and already turned it off with Trevor Noah making a Trump joke not even 5minutes in.”
He also took aim at Nick Cannon in a joke about his large brood before moving onto Beyonce, joking she was “coming for Andre 3000. “She’s nominated for the best country, Best Pop, best American and best melodic brand,” he said. “Yeah, Andre 3000 better watch out next year. She’s coming for that flute.”
Noah was again on hand to take on the hosting duties. It marked his fifth successive hosting stint on the annual bash. The comedian is best known for hosting Comedy Central’s The Daily Show between 2015 to 2022.
The 67th annual Grammy Awards was taking place once again at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and the star-studded audience were treated to a number of huge performances, including from Charli XCX and Shakira.
Among the artists with the most nominations prior to the night was Beyonce. The Cowboy Carter star led the way with 11 nominations. She was also a record-breaker before the event even began after becoming the most-nominated female artist in a single year. Others who received seven nominations included Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone.
With the ongoing fires in Los Angeles that resulted in, at one point, almost 200,000 people under evacuation orders, some weren’t entirely sure whether the Grammys would even go ahead as planned. However, with the show then confirmed to still go on, CBS revealed they planned to help those in need. It was announced prior to the show that the telecast would be raising funds to support relief efforts after wildfires devastated the Grammys’ hometown.
