Mrs Hinch fans have taken to social media to share their go-to hack for getting rid of black toilet stains – and all you need is one 88p product
While we’d all love a sparkling-clean toilet bowl, the reality is that loos can get quite dirty, regardless of how often you scrub them.
Many of us have faced the dreaded black streaks inside our bowls at some point, and typically, they appear just as you’re frantically cleaning before guests arrive. These black marks don’t reflect your housekeeping skills; they’re usually caused by mould, bacteria, or most likely, mineral deposits.
This is particularly common in hard water areas where mineral deposits form in your toilet, resulting in stubborn limescale. However, clever Mrs Hinch fans have shared their favourite trick for eliminating nasty black toilet stains, claiming an 88p ingredient works wonders.
On a popular Mrs Hinch cleaning hacks page, one frustrated fan confessed she was at her wit’s end with the black marks in her loo, having tried everything she could think of.
Sharing a photo of her stained loo bowl, she pleaded: “No judgement please. I’ve tried everything to get my toilet clean, any advice?” A large number of group members recommended the “amazing” Harpic Power Plus toilet cleaner tablets, assuring her that a single overnight application would dissolve any unsightly dark spots.
One person recommended: “Use the Harpic toilet cleaner tablets. My toilet gets hideous and covered in black impossible to remove stains. This takes it right off.” Another suggested: “Throw two of these down it and leave overnight. It only takes one application. In the morning flush the toilet and stains will have melted away.”
For regular cleaning, it is advised to leave one tablet in the bowl for at least six hours. However, for heavy limescale buildup, two tablets should be left overnight.
You can pick up a pack of eight Harpic Power Plus toilet cleaner tablets from Sainsbury’s and Tesco for £3.50 for a pack of eight, or 32 tablets from Amazon for £9.99. Given that just two tablets are needed to fight stains, this hack works out as just 88p each time.
