Fans of the discount store have been falling in love with the ‘stylish’ glassware – but they have also been warning each other

Home Bargains shoppers can pick up a “stylish” glass cup that’s “perfect for iced coffee season” – and only costs a few pounds. The item has been a hit on social media, with customers sharing videos of it on TikTok. However, people who have already purcahsed the glass cup have warned those getting one.

These Stanely Cup-inspired tumblers cost just £3.49 in the discount store, making them a much more affordable alternative. In a recent TikTok video posted by @Emilymeganmays, she shared her enthusiasm over the new glass cup, with many people in the comment section sharing praise.

One said: “These are stunning!” Another, tagging a friend, commented: “This is so your vibe!” whilst a third simply called them “super stylish”. There is also a smaller glass ‘can’ version of the glass cup, which costs £1.49 instead. It has the same wooden lid and glass straw.

However, some pointed out a very specific warning over what can happen if users do not clean the glass cup often enough. One person said: “I got this, and the wooden lid went mouldy, so just make sure to dry it straight after washing it!”

Someone posted: “Came here to say this! Mine got moldy too.” A fifth person posted: “Omg I thought it was just mine!! I got the B&M one and the lid went mouldy so quick!”

The lid is made from bamboo, which is a hygroscopic material – meaning it absorbs moisture quickly and dries out slowly. Therefore, customers should pay proper attention to how they clean this item after each use.

Being aware of this potential problem means you can act to prevent rather than suffer the loss of this glassware. The best way to stop the mould from turning your dream purchase into a nightmare is fairly simple.

Clean the lid with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it thoroughly. Another tip is to avoid soaking it in water for long periods – or putting it in the dishwasher.

Another important part of proper care is correctly storing it away in a dry place, preventing mould build-up. At the first sign of mould, remove it straight away. An easy and food-safe way is to use a cloth dipped in lemon oil or vinegar and water to clean it, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Home Bargains sells similar Stanley-style tumblers – including plastic and stainless steel options. These don’t have wooden lids, so they do not have the exact same risk of mould – but they should still be washed regularly between uses.

Drinking from a mouldy cup can cause an illness ranging from an upset stomach to serious health problems. If you believe you’re suffering with symptoms, seek medical help.
