Being near the water’s edge is commonplace in a local Zimbabwe village and often, children are sent to fetch water or clean crockery, but on one fateful day, the children weren’t alone

A 13 year old girl has tragically lost her life after being attacked by a crocodile while bathing in a river. Nomatter Raymond was taking a dip in the Hunyani River in Zimbabwe when the terrifying attack unfolded before her horrified friends.

The teenager had barely been in the water for a few minutes when the gigantic reptile surged from the depths and snatched her away.

Her friends Lynette Mazowe, 14 at the time, and Angela Chiedza, 12 at the time, who were fishing close by, witnessed the nightmare unfold and screamed for help when the tragedy took place in 2022.

Villagers immediately dashed to the scene and began searching, but the crocodile had disappeared with Nomatter’s body, reports the Daily Star.

Mashonaland Central Police Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed that her remains were discovered two days later, approximately 70 metres upstream.

Her horrifying injuries served as a stark reminder for anyone thinking of straying too close to the water’s edge in future. The medical examiner noted that she had sustained deep bite marks on her waist and back from the crocodile’s teeth, as well as a broken thumb and wrist from her struggle with the lethal creature.

He revealed more details on exactly what happened on that fateful day. “Nomatter Raymond, went with her young sister, aged eight, to wash dishes in Hunyani River.

“After washing dishes, Nomatter instructed her sister to go back with the dishes to the shed in the field while she remained behind to take a bath.

“That’s when she was then attacked by a crocodile and dragged underwater.”

He added a warning to anyone in the area. “Please stay away from crocodile-infested water bodies, especially young people.”

In a tragic turn of events, villagers in a remote part of Tanzania have pleaded with their government to eliminate a group of crocodiles that have claimed the lives of six people in just three months. The frightened inhabitants of Kimaramisale village have been advised to refrain from gathering water from the river’s edge to avoid becoming prey to these deadly creatures.

The crocodiles have been lying in wait as villagers collect water, then launching surprise attacks, dragging their victims under the water and consuming them. According to News.cn, the Tanzanian government has reached its limit and pledged to intervene to ensure the safety of the area.

A project is being initiated by the government in the region which will mean villagers no longer need to fetch water from the Ruvu River. However, in response to the lethal attacks, villagers are calling on the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to take more drastic action and exterminate the dangerous animals.

Unlike alligators that will wait for their food to come to them, crocodiles are opportunistic predators, meaning they will prey on almost any animal that comes into their path, including humans. They never turn down an easy meal and won’t hesitate to attack whenever possible.

Crocodile attacks are on the rise in the Zimbabwe area with 49 incidents recorded in two months. In a statement released on 12 March, 2025, ZimParks revealed that at least 44 cattle and 60 goats were also killed during the same period as 49 human-crocodile conflict cases.
