Hospitals could scrap paper leaflets and letters and launch pop-up clinics under plans being considered by ministers to help fix the NHS.

An online consultation website launched by Health Secretary Wes Streeting has seen more than half a million visits since it went live last week, with nearly 6,000 suggestions for improvements.

And scientists and celebrities – including TV’s Ross Kemp and chef Tom Kerridge – have urged the public to keep coming forward with suggestions.

Submissions to the website were public – leading to some eye-catching proposals, including installing a wetherspoons >Wetherspoon’s pub in every Hospital.

But Mr Streeting says he’s been ‘bowled over’ by the response to the scheme – the biggest ever consultation on the future of the NHS.

One suggestion under consideration is limiting the number of paper leaflets and letters to people without internet access to reduce waste.

Another proposals include a nationwide online appointment booking system, and pop-up clinics to meet surges in demand in areas of need.

Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting said: “I am bowled over by how many people are getting involved in this conversation, and it is clear the nation wants to help us fix our broken NHS.

“We’ve also had thousands of people visiting and leaving ideas and stories because people really do want to help turn the NHS around.

“Patients can see the need for change when they use the health service, and staff are sick and tired of being held back from doing their jobs properly. Their stories must be heard, and we have to learn from their experiences.

“The suggestions we’ve had so far aren’t the sorts of ideas that cross my desk, but they are the priorities of patients and staff, and they will be at the heart of our 10-year plan.

“Together, we will turn the NHS around so it’s always there for us when we need it. I urge everyone to go to Change.NHS.uk and help us build an NHS fit for the future.”

Michelin-starred Chef Tom Kerridge said: “As a chef and a parent, I believe every child deserves the best start in life. Learning about food and the importance of nutrition is a vital part of this and the NHS offers a wealth of advice to help families stay healthy.

“I hope this support reaches even more families in the future. That’s why I’ll be going to www.change.nhs.uk to share my ideas on how we can protect our children’s future. I urge everyone to get involved.”

Actor and presenter Ross Kemp said: “As someone who’s seen the incredible work of the NHS up close, I know how vital its role is in keeping the nation healthy.

“The dedication and resilience of NHS staff is inspiring, but to keep improving and adapting to our needs, the NHS needs us all. The NHS consultation is a chance for all of us to contribute to a healthier future. Let’s work together to take care of our health.”
