The beloved Maltesers Teaser is arguably the most popular chocolate inside the famous red Celebrations tub, but many people theorise there’s actually less of them than anything else – I wanted to see for myself

It’s not Christmas without a big red tub of Celebrations. This sweet treat is a tradition in many households – and everyone has their favourite.

Perhaps you’re a fan of the sumptuous, silky smooth Galaxy, or you enjoy the bite of a Twix. Or maybe you’re a bit rogue and opt for the divisive Bounty. Regardless, it does seem one chocolate always claims the top spot for many.

The beloved Maltesers Teaser is arguably the most popular offering to be found inside the famous red tub and many people theorise there’s actually fewer of them than anything else.

Keen to put this idea to the test, I picked up a tub of Celebrations to get a solid answer. This is hard-hitting, investigative journalism at its finest, folks.

With Christmas just around the corner, supermarkets are going all out with a wide range of festive sweets and savoury snacks to enjoy in the lead-up to the big day. I visited my local Asda on a mission to find a tub of Celebrations and decided to count the exact number of each chocolate inside.

Now, I will confess to being a little bit obsessed with Celebrations, and I do love any excuse to buy a tub so this experiment was perfect for me. The first thing I noticed was the tub seemed significantly smaller than usual. What’s that all about?!

I’m absolutely not a fan of this newer, slimline box – especially since it costs £6. You get 550g of chocolate inside which, quite frankly, doesn’t seem enough for the price in my humble opinion. I also remember these tubs costing £4 not too long ago.

Asda did have an offer on for two tubs of Christmas chocolates for £9, which works out at £4.50 each. But if you’re only after one, you’re having to spend a couple of quid more than you would’ve done a few years ago.

The smaller tub size has drawn criticism on social media. In one hilarious but expletive-filled TikTok video, creator and musician Garron Noone slammed the smaller box. At the time of writing, the video has been viewed more than 5.2 million times.

People shared their thoughts in the comments section. One person said: “Never forgave them for taking out the Galaxy Truffle to be honest.”

Another said: “It’s the plastic tins that ruin it for me. I miss the old big metal tins & plastic wrappers with foil. The smell isn’t the same when you open the lid.”

And another added: “Everything has gotten smaller and dearer, people should stop buying somethings for a while”.

When I got it home and opened it up, I was pleased to see the mix of available chocolates seemed pretty even – though I soon discovered this wasn’t the case. Here’s what I found in my Celebrations tub:

  • Maltesers – 5 (outrageous and very disappointing)

  • Galaxy – 4 (this has to be a joke)

  • Galaxy Caramel – 5 (devastating)

  • Mars – 9 (I do enjoy a Mars but it’s not a firm fave)

  • Milky Way – 10 (a bit controversial but I do love a Milky Way so this didn’t bother me)

  • Bounty – 8 (a bold move to give us more Bountys than Maltesers)

  • Snickers – 10 (is this really what replaced the Galaxy Truffle?!)

  • Twix – 8 (my least favourite)

Total number of chocolates: 59

I remember completing a similar experiment a couple of years ago and there were 71 chocolates in the tub, so we’re not imagining it when we think Celebrations have gotten smaller as there’s definitely fewer in the tub this Christmas.
