‘I never struggled with my skin until I reached my late twenties, so I’ve finally taken the plunge and tried LED tech to help cure it’

Plug-in beauty devices are becoming increasingly popular for those looking to help boost their skin, from acne breakouts to texture, plumpness and the all-important glow. In my late twenties my skin has never looked worse (thanks hormones) so I’ve taken to the LED mask trend in a bid to cure it.

Yes, the usually red-light glowing gadgets that tried and tested to significantly improve texture of the skin and wrinkles, brands like CurrentBody have proved popular time and time again with skincare fans, not forgetting Shark’s newest CyroGlow mask which uses (you guessed it) Insta-chill technology to depuff the face.

Both of the above industry-leading products are way over the £100 mark, but what if I told you there was one that’s a fraction of the price – it’s the Magnitone London GETLIT Tri Colour LED Face Mask, and it’s £50.25 in LookFantastic’s Black Friday sale.

Unlike the standard Red-light only LED masks this one offers three different colours; red, yellow, and blue light all of which treat something different. Including wrinkles, intensifying glow, and blemishes.

It has a portable design, and is wireless with a simple USB charge point.

Combining red-light therapy with the other two main LED skin treatments; the blood-flow stimulating yellow light and blue light for blemish prone skin this wireless treatment costs far less than rivals on the market. So I’ve put it to the test in a bid to cure my adult acne.

I only started to struggle with my skin as I reached my early to mid twenties, and at 26 years old now it’s still something I have to watch. Cystic acne wouldn’t be the type to describe it but a small area on my chin and jaw that suffers from what’s called papules acne – tiny under-the-skin bumps.

So combined with my three current go-to daily staples; the Paula’s Choice Liquid Exfoliator, CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser and my other new Magnitone London firming tool I’ve added the GETLIT Tri Colour LED Face Mask to my daily routine, and after only a few days here’s why I’ll be sticking to it.

First time using an LED face mask – are they worth it?

I can’t say, just yet, whether this wireless device has changed my skin as it’s too early to tell, I’d have to wait a few more weeks for that but I can say that at first use you get your money’s worth. As similar models can reach up to as much as £300 and the one I have currently costs £50.25.

Having used it for seven days straight, 1 hour and 75 minutes of use so far, I’ve tried out all three settings – with the Blue and Yellow light winning above the Red. As someone who is acne prone the blemish-busting blue light is a no-brainer and 15 minutes of this is said to help ‘decongest the skin’s surface’, a setting I’ve used most at night, after I’ve washed and cleansed off my daily makeup.

Then comes my favourite, the glow-intensifying yellow-light, where the hint is in the name. This setting is said to ‘stimulate more blood flow to the skin’ which helps make your face appear more radiant and glowing. I’ve used this specific setting more than five times already and it’s easy to add into my morning routine – wearing the mask as I get ready – hence the rollers.

The yellow setting has been the easiest to see the difference in my skin – unlike the Blue LED light for blemishes which I anticipate will take longer to see the effects of – I have noticed a difference in my skin’s look as while the box says ‘radiant and glowing’ I’d describe it more of a ‘less dreary healthy looking tone’.

As the Yellow LED light increases the blood flow to the skin the helps increase the delivery of oxygen and helps the skin absorb more nutrients.

How easy is it to use the GETLIT LED mask?

My next glowing point – no pun intended – is how easy it is to use. Straight out of the box all you need to do is give it a couple hours charge (until the side red light turns blue and you’re good to go) – then pop on like a pair of glasses, pick your colour LED treatment of choice, and wear it for 15 minutes – the one thing to point out is it does feel flimsy so I’d be careful.

In contrast to the Magnitone face-toning gadget, I’ve recently started using in a bid to delay Botox, the LED face mask can be done anywhere – while sat watching TV on the sofa, reading a book from bed, pottering around the house or in front of the bathroom mirror like most skincare routines take place – the point is there’s choice.

Over my week of using it I do personally think it’s worth beauty shoppers money, even if not picked up duriing the current Black Friday sale it offers three different LED treatments for a competitive price. While I’ve seen changes already with the yellow light I am yet to see a difference in the blemishes on my skin so there’s certainly an element of consistency when using this at-home device.

I also think the expectation of the LED technology as a treatment should be measured up with environment – how other factors like diet, lifestyle, and hormones can play with skin and while I love this product it’s not going to be the only thing that will help transform my skin and I think shoppers should know that before they buy it themselves.

Other LED masks to try

If you’re looking to shop around then there are plenty of alternatives to look at. Including the CurrentBody Light Therapy 2 Face Mask, at £399 it’s certainly higher budget but does offer more flexibility than the sturdy Magnitone one – so ideal if you wanted to throw in your overnight bag without worrying aout damaging it.
