I’m a Celeb: Coleen Rooney on Wayne being a football manager

Campmate Coleen Rooney opened up about her husband Wayne Rooney’s transition to football management during a discussion in camp on I’m A Celebrity this week.

Wayne, 39, had a career as a professional footballer for almost two decades, playing for clubs like Manchester United and D.C. United. He’s since retired and gone into management, with him currently at Plymouth Argyle.

His new career was brought up on the latest episode of I’m A Celebrity, which aired on Wednesday night. During a discussion in the camp on the ITV show, McFly’s Danny Jones, 38, asked Coleen, 38: “Is he loving managing?”

Responding to the question, Coleen shared that she now feels “more pressure” for her husband – who first ventured into being a football manager in 2020. She said: “Yeah, he does enjoy it. It’s hard work like. I find it more nerve-wracking him being a manager than I did [when he was a footballer].”

Coleen added: “I feel more pressure than I ever, ever did [when he was] playing.” She continued by telling some of her campmates: “I feel like when you’re playing, you’re part of this team. Whereas I feel like [when you’re a] manager … I know you’ve got a team of coaches and stuff … but it just seems to all be on one [person].”

She flew out to Australia for her stint on I’m A Celebrity just two weeks ago. It’s thought that Wayne has remained in the UK because of his managerial role with football club Plymouth Argyle and Coleen’s mother Colette McLoughlin is said to have been looking after the couple’s four children.

It was revealed on Wednesday that Colette has just arrived in Brisbane alongside husband Tony McLoughlin and their grandchildren Cass, six, and Kit, eight. Coleen’s eldest kids Kai, 15 and Klay, 11, have instead remained at home, with her previously sharing that they had made the decision to stay in the UK to continue with school and football.

Amid her stint in the jungle, Wayne shared last week that the family were missing her. He said on companion show I’m A Celebrity … Unpacked: “I think it’s the longest, you know, I’ve been without speaking to her since we were kids. And for the children, obviously it’s difficult not being able to speak to their mum. […] So, we’re missing her, but we’re enjoying watching as well.”

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! airs every night at 9pm on ITV1, STV and ITVX. I’m A Celebrity…Unpacked airs live on ITV2 every night directly after the ITV1 show.
