Fashion writer Lucy Addicott picked out her favourite pieces from this year’s Uniqlo autumn/winter collection and there’s one item she can’t believe is less than £35

Uniqlo are most notably known for their ‘Mary Poppins’ bag that took the fashion world by storm for its cool design and impressive storage capabilities. While you can still get your hands on the viral accessory here, the Japanese casual wear designer have recently dropped a whole new line of autumn and winter pieces that are perfect for updating your wardrobe with.

From trend-led cardigans, to cosy puffer coats, and even luxe-looking pyjama sets, Uniqlo really know how to get simple yet stylish items right. Perfect in those ‘I-have-nothing-to-wear’ moments, you can always count on Uniqlo’s classic, reliable pieces to look and feel great. The no-fuss numbers can easily slot into your existing collection of clothes, and the majority of them will set you back no more than £40.

As a fashion writer, it can become pretty tiresome when brands don’t have an inclusive size range on offer, but the majority of Uniqlo products come in XXS to XXL meaning you should be able to find a fit that works for you. Combining high-quality materials, affordability, and flattering styles, I’ve picked out my five best basics from Uniqlo’s autumn/winter range 2024 you’ll want to wear every day.

Knit Short Jacket

I was instantly drawn to this stripe knit jacket as I think it looks really expensive but comes in at less than £35. The designer style cardigan is stocked in sizes XXS to XXL so you can pick a fit that works for you – I would wear mine slightly more fitted with the buttons all the way up, but I think it would also look great open and oversized. It does feature pockets, however they are pretty small so I would say they are more for style rather than function.

It works for both formalwear and casual outfits and the textured feel adds an extra element to give a premium finish. At £34.90, I think it’s a real steal and reviews agree. One person confirmed: “I ordered this online and it turned out even better than expected! The cardigan is smooth, comfortable, non itchy & well made. It can be easily dressed up or down. Really pleased with it.”

Hybrid Down Coat

Uniqlo has an amazing selection of puffer coats and jackets – one of my favourites for this season has to be the Hybrid Down Coat. It’s not the most affordable coat on the high street priced at £109.10, but I think it’s a worthy investment especially if you plan on wearing it near enough everyday. It comes in black, cream or taupe and ticks a lot of boxes I look for in a winter coat.

First up, it boasts two roomy pockets that are lined with cosy fleece. This means you can pop your hands in their without gloves and they’ll still be toasty. It also has a two-way design so you can wear it with and without a hood, as well as using Uniqlo’s high performance padding to keep you warm.

Functionality aside, it’ll be a really flattering fit because you can adjust the waist to create your own silhouette. It’ll cinch you in at the waist all while keeping you warm and comfortable which isn’t something you typically find in puffer coats.

Cashmere Crew Neck Short Cardigan

Browsing through the cashmere range at Uniqlo and this Cashmere Crew Neck Short Cardigan for £99.90 immediately stood out to me. If you couldn’t tell from my pick above, this autumn, I’m loving the button-up cardigan trend. I know it’s a style I will wear time and time again, so I don’t mind spending that little bit extra on a high-quality item. I also noticed that reviews for this cardigan state that the design ‘does not bobble’ meaning you can wash it freely without fear.

The cardigan comes in sizes XS to XL and while my favourite is ‘beige’, a soft mushroom brown, it’s also available in black, pink, white and mustard. There’s nothing worse than itchy knitwear but this 100% cashmere cardigan promises a super soft finish that should feel like a dream. The lightweight feel means it might not be one I reach for on a really cold day without a coat, however, it’s ideal for transitional autumn weather and the perfect knit to layer.

Lambswool Turtleneck Dress

I think everyone should have a jumper dress in their wardrobe as an autumn and winter staple. They are so easy to throw-on-and-go, and they look like you’ve put a lot more effort in than it actually took. Better yet, they are super comfortable. This Lambswool Turtleneck Dress is £39.90 and comes in black, brown or grey. For a 100% wool piece it’s a brilliant price at less than £40.

It comes with its own belt so you can wear it as loose or as fitted as you prefer, and while it sits as a midi style, it is possible to fold it over around the waist for a shorter length. The turtleneck might be a little too much for some, but I think it looks effortlessly cool, plus it can double up as a scarf in the winter.

AIRism Cotton Pyjamas

I can’t be the only one who loves treating themselves or a loved one to a new pair of cosy pyjamas when autumn rolls around. These AIRism Cotton Pyjamas come in at £34.90 for the set in navy, beige, or pink. The long sleeved, button-up shirt and long trousers are designed with a contrasting trim which I think makes them look a lot more expensive than £35.

Stocked in sizes XXS to XXL you can really find a fit that works for you and the elastic waist with a drawstring makes for easy size adjustment if you aren’t too sure when ordering online. If you find yourself running warm at night, even in the winter, they are crafted using Uniqlo’s quick-drying DRY technology for stay-fresh comfort that will stop you feeling sweaty. The trousers also feature pockets on both sides – need I say more.

Elsewhere, Nobody’s Child have up to 30% off their autumn picks including knitwear, trousers, sweatshirts and tops. One of my favourites is this Pink Collar Pointelle Wool Blend Knitted Jumper down to £71.20 in the sale. Marks and Spencer are another excellent place to pick up basics for this season – the Textured Crew Neck Relaxed Fit Jumper with Wool comes in biscuit or grey marl and is £39.50.
