At just age 18, Nick struggled so much with feeling good due to loosing his hair – and was desperate to try anything to hide his baldness. Now, with a new found confidence, he is on a mission to help others with hair loss

A man has opened up about what it was like wearing wigs every day after losing his hair at 18.

Hair is a big part of many people’s appearances, so it can be daunting if you start to notice it thinning, fading or falling out. Nick’s confidence plummeted when he started to loose hair as a teenager – and he would do anything to try and hide the patches on his head.

Nick has been called “baldy” and had people tell him he looks like he is in his 60s, due to his lack of hair. Speaking to YouTube’s Truly TV recently, he said: “I started noticing the sides where they were starting to recede and that shocked me. I was thinking are people going to make fun of me, it really struck my confidence.”

At first, Nick tried simple solutions such as always wearing caps; even on nights out he would wear a cap but he found it was hard to chat to women. He recalls once taking the hat off as requested by a potential love interest in a club and when he did, the woman promptly told him to put it back on. On another occasion he used eyeshadow to colour in the patches where hair had fallen out, but someone asked ‘why do you have eyeshadow in your hair?’.

Eventually, Nick found it hard to socialise as he felt too insecure and at a loss for what to do. Plus, he began to be envious of his friends who still sported full heads of hair and strong hairlines.

“I tried to shave it but it grew back in a ridiculous way,” he said. “I didn’t want to be around friends or family, I had no confidence at all.”

Naturally, the young man, who has been sharing his journey on social media, was desperate to try anything. He considered getting a hair transplant but with the hefty price tag and risk of potentially not working, he decided it was not for him.

Instead, he then landed on hair systems. He was skeptical at first and didn’t think they would be authentic enough. However in 2021 Nick found a salon that did the systems and coincidentally it was just two streets away from his home. He had a consultation and was colour matched.

The hair system usually lasts four to six weeks, and he applies it with an adhesive. It is real, donated hair that has been turned into a wig. They can vary between £160 – £1000, and Nick believes it is more cost effective than a hair transplant.

Nick commented: “The first time I wore a hair system it changed my life, my confidence skyrocketed, I was out and feeling myself, socialised better, didn’t think about my hair, had no fears, they all disappeared.”

“You can go swimming with it, you can wash it, you can work out, you can do anything with it,” Nick explained.

Nick said he started sharing videos of his hair loss journey online during lockdown and while he has had some negativity, many people have thanked him for bravely opening up and stopping the stigma around hair loss. He is on a mission to help other men on their journey who are struggling with confidence and self esteem due to hair loss.

Showing support for Nick on YouTube, one individual said: “I think he is handsome either way but it is so important how we feel about for ourselves. Go for it mate.”

“Beautiful man, do what makes you happy,” added another. One other pointed out: “I think he would look awesome totally bald. He could pull the look off so easily. I understand why he wears the wigs but dude, you would look amazing totally bald also!”

“He looks great either way,” added another.
