It’s easy to get sucked into trends and buying new items that you think you need, but a personal finance advisor insists you declutter your house and save money with a ‘no spend’ list

It’s that time of year when you might be feeling a pinch in your purse post Christmas and New Year’s Eve – and a good clear out can help you see what you have to prevent you spending more this year.

Abbi, who is a personal finance expert, says this year she has made a list of ‘no spend items’. She insists that she will not buy any items that she does not need. Instead she advises conducting a big clear out in your home to see what you have and if it is really necessary to buy more.

The money content creator took to Instagram via her page @abbitalksmoney, and said: “I’ve never done a list of no spend items before but my house is feeling so cluttered so I thought this would be exactly what I need for 2025. It’s the perfect reminder to stop spending on things I don’t need, and as you can see I definitely don’t need anymore until I’ve used up what I already have.”

She says she will not be buying any more candles after finding loads of half used ones in her home. She also advises not spending money on birthday cards – unless it is for a close family member. Instead you could send a friend a digital message.

The financial advisor says she has loads of pens and will not be buying any more if they run out; she can just type any information she needs up on her computer. Although it is easy to get sucked into new beauty product trends, the content creator says she will be attempting not to spend any more money on toiletries this year as she has plenty at home and will try and use at least half of what she has.

She also showed how many clothing items she has, including 11 jumpers – many of which she often doesn’t wear. She says she is going to attempt to wear the clothes she has instead of buying new items.

“Plants – just need to keep current ones alive,” Abbi added. Other people rushed to the comments to shared what they won’t be spending money on this year in a bid to save cash.

One individual said: “Books… it’s going to be really hard. I got back into reading in a big way in 2024. I’d like to read at least half of it [a book] before buying a new book.”

“No books, no body creams,” added another. One other wrote: “My no spend for 2025 is houseplants, clothes (unless the four pairs of leggings I wear on rotation do infect all rip in the crotch) and books. I have so many houseplants already, I don’t need any more clothes and I have at least 100 books to be read.”

One other shared their suggestion and said: “I’ve used up all my cleaning supplies and reduced down to the basics, popped some Fairy liquid in an old spray bottle with some water. Cupboards are less cluttered, helps to keep the costs down a bit!”
