The Coach & Horses in Billinghay, Lincs, has proven a hit with drinkers, but not everyone is a fan of the boozy names – which include In Cider, Kim Jong Ale and Putin’s Porter

Welcome to the Coach & Horses in Billinghay, Lincs, a pub that stocks some of Britain’s most controversially named beers, including Osama Bin Lager, Saddam’s Stout and In Cider.

The pub is managed by Catherine Mitchell, 37, whose husband Luke, 36, is the brains behind Mitchell Brewing Co. He began brewing three years ago, introducing the ‘fun’ names a year later. His most popular range, called the Dictator, has already proved a hit with drinkers.

Other names include Kim Jong Ale, Putin’s Porter and Orange Mussolini. The pub also offers a more risqué range of drinks, with names like Berried In Cider, A Nice Pear In Cider, Hop In Cider Sloe and SexuALE.

When it comes to naming the beers, Luke allows each new staff member to come up with a catchy new name. He said: “The Dictator Range is the one that attracts people — that was supposed to end last year but it’s proved so popular so we’ve kept it going.

“If we can use controversial names to help and build the brewery higher then great. Truthfully everyone who tries our beer seems to like it.

“Nearly every staff member is ex-military and they all get to choose a new name. Osama Bin Lager has been the best seller – but Kim Jong Ale was the first we did.”

However, not everyone is a fan of the controversial names after a recent TikTok video — now deleted — in which a visitor to the pub complained. Luke remarked: “I heard about it and to be fair she handled it quite well and she just said it wasn’t for her.”

He added: “Although we were accused of being sexist, but the pub is a whole female workforce.”

The menu features intriguingly named drinks with prices like £4.10 for a pint of Osama, £3.20 for a Kim Jong, and an In Cider setting you back £4.

In a Google review, visitor Mark stated: “Cracking place selling it’s own unique beers. Undergoing major refurbishment. Friendly staff and bags of potential for becoming a fantastic establishment!”

In another review, visitor Angela said: “We stopped here today as a last minute decision on the way to out mini moon in Tattersall Lakes. The food was lovely, the pub is very quirky and has the owners own vision and stamp being put onto it. The owners are lovely.”

For those wanting to try the quirkily-named beers and ales, they can purchase them from the pub’s website, along with other merchandise.
