Former Chelsea and PSG coach Thomas Tuchel has been named the new England manager, but what do we know about the German coach?

Thomas Tuchel has been officially announced as England’s new manager – but what do fans really know about the German coach?

Tuchel’s on-field victories have been well-reported. The 51-year-old has clinched titles in France and Germany, with PSG and Bayern Munich and, most notably, won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund boss has also bagged a slew of domestic cups and guided the Blues to the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup, also in 2021. His triumphs from the sidelines have made him a favourite among many European fans.

However, supporters might not be familiar with the other aspects of Tuchel’s life. So, from his previous residence in Surrey to his ever-increasing net worth and complex love life, let’s delve deeper into the new man at the helm of England.

What is Thomas Tuchel’s net worth?

While he may have had to deal with a high-profile divorce from his ex-wife Sissi, the former Mainz coach appears to have the financial resources to manage such turmoil in his life. One Football estimates that the German’s net worth is around £15million, as of 2023, but that will have increased following the lucrative contract he had at Bayern Munich, which was worth £7.5m a year.

After accepting the England role, he’ll now pocket £5m annually. However, this is a decrease in earnings from his tenure as Chelsea head coach, where he was reported to be raking in £10m a year – he was also handed a whopping £13m by The Blues upon his dismissal in September 2022.

Thomas Tuchel’s home life

While at the reins at Stamford Bridge in January 2021, Tuchel made a home in London. At first, he embraced bachelor-style living and lived alone in his residence.

However, his family – including ex-wife Sissi and their children Emma and Kim – joined him during his second season at Chelsea. The quartet settled into a cosy Surrey nook, conveniently close to Chelsea’s Cobham training pitches in Stoke d’Abernon.

Tuchel opened up about the transition in July 2021: “It was a long summer, but it did not feel so long because I was in Paris to help my family move the house and finish school for the kids over there.

“My wife took care of [the house move] so I did not get in the way too much. Now it is good that they have joined me and that they are close to me, this is how it should be. It is also nice to be back now. It is a good feeling.”

Previously, Sissi played a pivotal role in Tuchel’s life and career. Notably, she was hands-on during his departure from Dortmund in 2017, even finding a place to live in Paris before Tuchel’s leap to the top job at PSG.

Thomas Tuchel’s divorce

Tuchel’s love life has been in the news since he split from his wife of 13 years. He married Sissi in 2009 while living and working in Germany, and the couple has two daughters.

Sissi, formerly a journalist with the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, reportedly left her role to focus on family life. She was said to be a major influence on Tuchel’s career, often offering advice on key decisions.

Although Sissi wasn’t a regular at Tuchel’s matches, she made an appearance at the 2021 FA Cup final in Wembley, where Chelsea lost to Leicester City. She also attended the Champions League final in Porto, witnessing the Blues’ victory over Manchester City.

The couple’s marriage ended in 2022. According to court papers, Sissi initiated divorce proceedings citing irreconcilable differences, and an insider told the Mail on Sunday that separation seemed to be the only path forward for the pair.

“Sissi and Thomas have tried to avoid splitting, but in the end, there was no other way,” the source said. “It is very sad and now it is all about making sure their daughters are the top priority. Papers were lodged to get the divorce underway.”

Post-divorce, Tuchel was seen holidaying with Natalie Max, a Brazilian mother of two who is reportedly 13 years his junior. By July 2022, Tuchel and his new love interest were snapped enjoying their time together in Sardinia, staying at a lavish £20,000-a-night private villa.

A confidant revealed to the Sun that they were spotted “holding hands at every opportunity,” while another added that the pair seemed “very much in love.”

Tuchel, who has been living with Natalie in Munich after his tenure with Bayern came to an end, is also close to his two daughters. However, the German is set to relocate to the UK as he embarks on his new journey as England manager starting January 1, 2025.
