The 68-year-old Good Morning Britain host opened up about the startling medical emergency that saw his daughter having her stomach pumped on Christmas morning one year

Richard Madeley has shared a shocking family tale about his daughter’s overindulgence in cheese leading to a medical emergency. The Good Morning Britain host revealed that Chloe, then around 17 or 18 years old, had to have her stomach pumped at A&E after the camembert-related incident one Christmas morning.

During an appearance on ITV’s Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening with Chloe, it was disclosed that she had ‘gone into bacterial shock’ following a night out and consuming two wheels of camembert. Cleveland Clinic describes bacterial shock as ‘the last and most severe stage of sepsis’, characterised by critically low blood pressure that can be fatal.

On Saturday, Richard said: “Chloe actually ended up in A&E on Christmas morning because of cheese. She was about 17/18. She’d been out on the lash on Christmas Eve. We’d all gone to bed. I could hear noises coming from the nearest bathroom through the night. I thought she’s not very well, she’s had too much to drink.

“She’d actually come home and eaten two rounds of camembert from the fridge. She’s eaten two of them in one go and she’s basically got cheese poisoning.”

Chloe herself confirmed the severity of the situation, stating: “The MA [medical assistant] said I’d gone into bacterial shock,” according to Birmingham Live. The personal trainer then underwent the procedure to have her stomach pumped as a result.

Now 37, Chloe Madeley also recently shared insights about her mother’s struggle with postnatal depression and its impact on their relationship over the years. Speaking on the Made by Mamas podcast, Chloe reportedly said: “It was really unfortunate actually, after I was born she got really bad postnatal depression and it went undiagnosed for a really long time and then when she was finally on a good track to getting that sorted out, it turned out that she needed a hysterectomy.

“And she’d needed one again for a really long time and didn’t know about it and then when she finally had the hysterectomy it didn’t go very well, the operation didn’t go very well, the recovery didn’t go very well. And it was just kind of really weirdly and unfortunately for our relationship, kind of event after event after event that really all got in the way of us really bonding and by the time I was a teenager, my relationship with my dad was so solidified and my relationship with my mum was just very murky and not really that solid.”

In October 2023, Chloe announced her split from husband and former rugby player James Haskell, with whom she shares a child named Bodhu.
