A woman has shared her ‘life-saving’ travel hack for keeping a hotel room at the perfect temperature – and it only requires one item you’ve probably already got in your wallet

Add a touch of luxury to your next holiday with this hack.

We all want the best when we jet off on our holidays. After all, it’s our one opportunity to escape the daily grind and unwind for a week or two before returning to the rat race. So, naturally, we want to maximise our time and bask in luxury.

One of the most irksome aspects of hotel stays can be the room temperature controls, whether it’s air conditioning or heating. Typically, you have to insert your room key into a wall device to activate the controls, and as soon as you remove your key to head out for the day, the system powers down – leaving you to return to a room that’s either sweltering or freezing.

But what if there was a nifty trick to ensure your room is always at the ideal temperature? Shared on TikTok by Jord Bernard, this hack is something we can all try on our next hotel visit without shelling out any extra dosh – provided you have one essential item with you.

Jord revealed that if you have any other card handy, you can often slot it into the wall device to keep the electricity flowing – it doesn’t have to be your room key. Any card could do the trick, but it’s probably best not to use your bank card, so bring along a less crucial card like a library card, a store or supermarket points card, or a public transport travel card on your holiday.

In a video clip, Jord shared: “For anyone who doesn’t already know, you can put any card in the slot in your hotel room, which means you can leave the AC on when you go to dinner and come back to a perfectly chilled room.”

Some people argued this could waste energy if left on all day, but Jord clarified she only uses this trick for about 30 minutes while getting ready for dinner, so her room is cool enough without needing the AC on all night. She added: “No more having to leave the AC on while you sleep! As someone who spends zero time in my room, this is an actual lifesaver. I just give the AC a quick 30-minute blast while I’m at dinner, and then it’s the perfect temperature for sleeping.”

Many praised her hack, with some saying they feel entitled to use more electricity on holiday than at home. Others noted that in some hotels, a card is needed for the fridge to work, so a card would need to be left in the slot to keep food and drinks cold.

One individual said: “I do this. Not because I want to keep the room cool or to waste energy, but I want to keep the mini-bar/fridge cool because I keep food and drink in it for later!” Meanwhile, another person chimed in: “I wanted to leave something in the fridge once and it wouldn’t work without the card, so it’s very smart for that.”
