A new seasonal activity has taken over social media with people ‘unboxing’ conkers and seeing which ones they end up getting.

It’s a wrap on the summertime, and the chilly weather is slowly taking over. That also means streets covered in crunchy orange leaves and a few other little surprises.

Say farewell to your collection of Labubus and Sonny Angels, because people have been replacing those with conkers. Yes, you’ve read that right. Having gone viral on TikTok, people have been sharing videos of themselves ‘unboxing’ its spikey hard case.

Who would’ve thought that a chestnut would bring such entertainment online? Dubbing them “nature’s Labubus” and “nature’s blindbox”, users have been opening up these horse chestnuts to see what kind of conker they get.

Created by illustrator Kasing Lung in 2015, the Labubus craze started in 2024, becoming a must-have accessory. These scary little dolls, often sold out online and in stores, are wrapped in foil packages. Collectors don’t know what they get until they open the box, so it’s a surprise.

But it seems that the autumn weather has brought a fun way to unbox its very own ‘nature Labubu’ – and it doesn’t cost a penny.

What are conkers?

Conkers are the glossy, reddish-brown seeds of the horse chestnut tree. From late September through October, people can find them in parks and gardens. Falling from the tree, their spiny cases can open on the ground, revealing the nut inside. They can come in different shapes and sizes, and in some cases, you might find more than one inside.

According to the Woodland Trust, conkers shouldn’t be consumed as they can be poisonous to humans and most animals. Once eaten, it can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and drowsiness.
