Firefighters at the scene of huge fire at Huyton Industrial Estate

A massive fire has broken out at an industrial estate in Merseyside with emergency services on the scene.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police are currently stationed on Wilson Road at Huyton Industrial estate and tackling the blaze with 10 fire engines now in attendance and two aerial appliances. Images show a huge mound of rubbish well alight, with black smoke billowing up into the air.

The scene, which is close to the delivery business APC, is currently cordoned off, with the fire have spread rapidly in a question of minutes. Many people have gathered by the scene of the fire, which can be seen for miles around but the fire service has warned people to keep indoors and close windows due to the smoke.

People with an existing health condition “should keep medicines close and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice”, warned Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

A spokesperson said: “There are now 10 fire engines and two aerial appliances assigned to this incident for personnel and due to the size of the fire. Crews are working incredibly hard to tackle the blaze. A ground monitor and one main jet is in use, as the aerial appliance is being set up.”

“Due to a visibly large smoke plume, residents and businesses in the area should keep doors and windows closed. People with an existing health condition should keep medicines close and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice. This is an ongoing incident, please avoid the area.”

Crews were alerted at 19.34 and on scene at 19.48, with six fire engines and one aerial appliance first attending. “On arrival they found a large pile of household waste on fire measuring approximately 50m x 50m and 5m in height. The fire has spread to a nearby single storey warehouse,” said the fire brigade.

And in their latest update at 22.45pm it said that the fire was ongoing but it had been “sectorised”. It stated: “The incident has been sectorised. There is one aerial appliance in use in sector one, two main jets and one hose reel jet in use in sector two, one covering branch, one aerial appliance and one hose reel jet in use in sector three, and four main jets in use and one high volume pump being set up in sector four to help boost water supplies. This is an ongoing incident, please avoid the area.”

A neighbour told the Liverpool Echo he had concerns about a recycling plant for a while. He said: “A few months back they started dealing with household waste, then shut up shop completely a couple of months ago. They used to deal with plastics and metal.”

A complex fire suppression operation is currently underway to tackle the large ongoing blaze at Huyton Industrial Estate, with at least 10 fire engines working to put out the flames. A variety of on-the-ground and in-the-air hoses are being directed at individual sections, while a high volume pump is being used to keep the fire crews supplied through the night.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said in an update: “The incident has been sectorised. There is one aerial appliance in use in sector one, two main jets and one hose reel jet in use in sector two, one covering branch, one aerial appliance and one hose reel jet in use in sector three, and four main jets in use and one high volume pump being set up in sector four to help boost water supplies.

“This is an ongoing incident, please avoid the area.”

As the large ongoing fire on Wilson Road burns into the night, sending up black clouds of smoke, a local transport firm has been told to move its buses while fire fighting operation continues.
