Liverpool vs Manchester United is scheduled to kick off at 4.30pm on Sunday afternoon, but the Premier League game is under threat of postponement following heavy snow

Liverpool’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon hangs in the balance after the decision on a postponement was delayed.

Heavy snow has fallen on Merseyside overnight, prompting safety concerns, with icy roads in the north west of the UK. Liverpool are scheduled to host United at Anfield at 4.30pm – and the game will either get the green light or the dreaded postponement after an emergency meeting takes place at 12pm.

Mirror Football understands that the Safety Authority Group will meet again at midday because it is hoped the weather will improve in the coming hours.

Liverpool said in a statement: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield.

“At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions.

“We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.”

Chesterfield’s game against Gillingham and Fleetwood’s match with AFC Wimbledon have already been postponed in League Two, along with Huddersfield Town Women vs Norton Ladies and AFC Fylde Women vs Middlesbrough Women.

Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon and Birmingham Airports have all closed their runways this morning due to heavy snow.

The UK’s roads and train network has also been affected, with trains into Liverpool Lime Street Station cancelled until 12pm at the earliest. National Rail, Great Western Railway, Northern, ScotRail and TransPennine Express services have all announced delays to their services.

It comes after a severe weather warning was issued by the Met Office following 25cm of snow in some areas.
