Manchester United have endured an awful season so far and could have done with a number of signings to get them back on track but it has been a relatively quiet window for the Red Devils

Manchester United’s work in the January transfer window has finished – and it’s been an underwhelming window for the Red Devils.

Ruben Amorim’s men have endured an absolutely awful campaign so far, sitting 13th and looking some way off any form of European football. And some more signings would potentially have gone a long way to getting them back on track.

Attacking recruits in particular would have been very useful given United’s goalscoring troubles this season. But it’s in defence where United chiefs have chosen to strengthen this time around.

Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu became Amorim’s first signing since his arrival at Old Trafford. United have paid £29.2million for his signature and he has signed a contract until 2030.

The Danish left-back was also joined by another young defender Ayden Heaven, who has completed a move from Premier League rivals Arsenal. He has put pen to paper on a deal until 2029 and has been handed a place in United’s first-team squad.

Speaking after his move was made official, Heaven said: “I am incredibly proud to join Manchester United. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this dream a reality.

“There is so much that I want to achieve in the game, I’ll be giving everything to continue my development and become the best player that I can be.”

And while it has been relatively quiet on the incomings front, there have been a number of high-profile exits. Academy graduate Marcus Rashford, who has been banished from the first team by Amorim, has sealed a loan move to Aston Villa until the end of the season.

The Midlands side have an option to make that switch permanent, while they are currently paying a large chunk of his wages. Fellow wideman Antony has also been allowed to leave after completing a loan move to Spanish side Real Betis.

That duo are the most high-profile exits but there have been a whole host of other loan moves throughout the month. Youngster Dan Gore has joined Wigan Athletic in a temporary deal, with Ethan Wheatley penning a switch to League Two promotion-chasers Walsall.

The loan moves don’t quite end there. Joe Hugill has joined Carlise, with Ethan Ennis also being sent on loan to Doncaster Rovers. Cheltenham Town have swooped for Ethan Williams, while Jack Kingdon has the chance to get some vital experience with Rochdale. Sam Mather and Louis Jackson have both in the meantime moved to Tranmere.
