Marks & Spencer isn’t new to bringing distinctive food items to the shelves, but the white pearl strawberries definitely caused a commotion – and they’re back
Marks & Spencer has officially brought back its famous white pearl strawberries, leaving shoppers amazed at how a fruit can maintain its unusual white colour while still tasting like a strawberry with a particular hint.
First introduced in 2023, M&S was the first UK retailer to bring these unique strawberries to the market. With their white skin and red seeds, the strawberries quickly caught the attention of customers. As part of its commitment to offering innovative and exciting new flavours, M&S continues to surprise shoppers with unusual yet delicious finds in its Foodhall.
Often described as a “strawberry in reverse”, this fascinating fruit is white on the outside with pure white flesh on the inside, contrasting sharply with its bright red seeds. However, its uniqueness isn’t just visual. The White Pearl Strawberry is said to be just as sweet as a regular red strawberry but with additional notes of pineapple and vanilla, making it an even more intriguing treat for fruit lovers.
M&S took to Instagram in January to announce the much-anticipated return of these special berries, writing: “These are not just strawberries… these are Collection White Pearl M&S strawberries and they are OFFICIALLY back in the Foodhall! these gorgeous berries have a white base colour even when perfectly ripe, making them look like typical strawberries in reverse.”
The announcement quickly got attention, with hundreds of excited comments from intrigued shoppers. Some couldn’t wait to get their hands on them, while others were still confused by its concept. One user wrote: “Ooooh. Not sure how I feel about this.” Another commented: “Can’t wait to try these! Maybe we should refer to them reserve-berry?” A third added: “My head is messed up looking at these.”
The Collection White Pearl Strawberries are priced at £4 per 200g. Interestingly but not surprisingly – just like any other fruit – they’re also a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Also known as “pineberries”, white strawberries originally come from South America and North America. However, Japan is the largest producer and consumer, where they are often referred to as “white jewels”.
This isn’t the first time M&S has introduced a distinctive fruit to its shelves. Other unique offerings have included Candy Floss Grapes, Baby Kiwi Berries, Orange Candy Melons, and the Limelon.
The White Pearl Strawberries are now available to purchase in all Marks & Spencer Foodhalls, but due to their popularity, availability may vary by location.
