Maria Mendes was gunned down by police after she horrifically killed her six year old son Miguel Alves at her apartment in Brazil. She tried to attack police with a knife

A depraved mum who beheaded her son in a satanic ritual has died following a stand-off with police.

Maria Mendes, 26, brutally killed Miguel Alves, 6, inside her apartment in the Brazilian city of João Pessoa. Cops rushed to the scene after they received reports of an assault when neighbours heard little Miguel’s cries for help. Paraiba Military Police stormed into the property and found the mum sitting with his head placed on top of her lap.

Officers attempted to arrest her as she tried to attack them with a knife. In response, the mum was shot 14 times and was hospitalised on September 20. According to reports, she later developed an infection in relation to her injuries and she passed away on Thursday, October 17.

Concerned residents shared their audio recordings with investigators, who heard the six-year-old screaming. He said: “Help I’m going to die,” “Help, help me,” and “Mommy, I love you.” When officers searched the building they discovered their pet cat in one of the bedrooms and found the feline was in pain. Cops also uncovered several videos which featured satanic decapitation rituals.

It remains unclear why Mendes murdered her son in the two-bedroom apartment. Locals said that the pair moved into their home in August, but did not know much else about them. Mendes was set to be charged with cruelty, homicide and attempted homicide charges, reports Daily Mail.

Over in the UK, a mum was found beheaded at her home in April last year after tests revealed she had been beaten to death. Odessa Carey, 73, from Ashington, was believed to have been struck on the head with a mallet. Her daughter, who is also named Odessa Carey, is thought to have beheaded her with knives and scissors after she had died.

Neighbour Jade Curtis, who followed the trial said: “Odessa was was lovely. She was just so bright and and welcoming. It is quite hard to get your head round. She was just so nice, it’s just hard to believe someone that nice could go through what she went through. People don’t really talk about it now, it’s like it’s hidden.”

In a statement, the victim’s family said she had been “taken from us in a horrific and vicious attack by our younger sister, who had suffered mental health issues for many years”. “We believe that the mental health system failed us and vast improvements need to be made,” they said. “It is too late for our mam and sister, but hopefully they will learn from our tragic loss and stop others from going through the same heartbreak.” Her 36-year-old daughter was sentenced to a hospital order.
