Netflix has added a film that many fans are hailing as ‘Nicolas Cage’s finest performance’, drawing comparisons to the much-loved action blockbuster John Wick.
The streaming giant is always refreshing its catalogue of films and TV shows. Alongside their original content, they frequently introduce both classic and modern titles. The past month has been no exception with several new additions bulking up subscribers’ watchlists. However, amidst the flurry of new releases like the festive action thriller Carry-On, Black Doves and the highly anticipated return of Squid Game, there was another addition in December that movie buffs should not overlook.
Pig, first released in 2021, is now ready for streaming on Netflix. The film features Nicolas Cage in a role that many have labelled as an unusual choice for the often polarising actor. In the movie, Cage portrays a truffle-hunter living in solitude in the wilderness. When his cherished foraging pig is stolen, he is forced to face his past, reports the Daily Record.
Pig, penned and directed by Michael Sarnoski, marked the filmmaker’s debut in feature film direction. He later went on to direct the spin-off prequel A Quiet Place: Day One. Although the film had a moderate box office turnout due to its limited cinematic release, it rapidly became a favourite among critics and movie buffs.
Currently boasting an almost flawless 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, both fans and critics agree that Cage’s portrayal was exceptional. One enthusiast remarked: “The best movie I’ve ever seen, an absolute cult piece. It’s become my favourite movie since I saw it. Nicolas Cage’s best movie.”
An online comment read: “This movie is an absolute masterpiece, beautiful and so incredibly sensitive. I connected with this movie right from the start, it’s such a totally different story, it has you so emotionally invested from the beginning to the end. Its a very different acting role for Nicolas Cage and one that shows just how great an actor he still is.”
Someone else lauded the film for its lasting impact, stating, “This film not only is the best film of 2021, but possibly the best film of this new decade, and most definitely a defining film in Nicolas Cage’s career. Cage’s delivery is not what one would expect from him, as his usual overly dramatic and expressive acting is what people think of him, in Pig, however, he gives an amazing performance, in which he suits the sombre tone of the film perfectly.”
