The Rangers manager is set to leave the club after a dismal 2-0 defeat to St Mirren on Saturday afternoon – with the club in talks over his departure
Rangers manager Philippe Clement is set to be sacked.
The Rangers boss saw his side beaten by St Mirren on Saturday – that disheartening loss coming hot on the heels of the shocking Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen’s Park earlier this month.
Clement clung on in the face of mounting pressure despite his side’s inability to keep pace with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership – and with the growing prospect of ending the season without a trophy, with only the Europa League standing as a realistic chance.
CEO Patrick Stewart insisted that the club would stick by the boss earlier this week, with fans spirits rising after news of the 49er Enterprises takeover bid was revealed.
However, the Premiership setback against St Mirren, occurring just hours after rivals Celtic faltered at Hibs, appears to have sealed Clement’s fate. Discussions about his potential departure are underway.
As first reported by The Record, negotiations concerning the terms of his exit package are ongoing, with the compensation expected to exceed the £1.2 million initially suggested.
Barry Ferguson, the iconic former captain is a prime candidate for the interim managerial role, potentially enlisting Neil McCann’s assistance.
In what could be his final interview, a crestfallen Clement insisted he would fight on. Asked about his future, he said: “Those are things the board needs to decide. In the end, I believe these players want to do the right things.
“I believe I can get results with these players. But I am also very disappointed with what we showed today – and I am responsible for that. Today was by far not the performance that we have seen in the past. It was by far the worst performance from my time here.”
