Three 50p coins are worth up to £250 – here’s how to check if you actually own one
A coin collector has revealed the three 50p coins that are worth a lot of money – including a coin with an error on it. Rare coins can often be found hidden amongst your change, which is why coin collectors are encouraging people to make sure that they’re checking their change for unusual coins. The fact is that some coins can be worth a lot more than their original value, particularly if you opt to sell them at an auction or via sites like eBay.
While not all 50ps are worth money, there are three that coin collectors advise keeping an eye out for. A coin collecting enthusiast, who goes by @CoinCollectingWizard online and shares tips and advice for all the best coins to look out for, has shared a video about the best 50ps to hold on to.
Colin, who has 181,000 followers on TikTok, revealed which three 50ps could be worth a load of money. In his video, he asked: “Do you have any 50p coins with interesting designs? You might just have a rare one. The 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p is usually just worth face value unless you have a rare rotation error version.”
He then explained that the error is that on the Benjamin Bunny coin, the Queen’s head has been printed the wrong way around. He said: “When a coin is flipped over, the Queen’s head should be facing to the left but on a rotation error coin, this would be different. Around £30 is what you can get for this coin.”
He then spoke about the Athletics 50p from the London 2012 Olympic collection, which included 29 different 50p coin designs, made to commemorate the iconic games. Colin explained: “Around 2.2million of the Athletics 50p coin was minted and released into circulation in 2011. But this earlier version was minted in 2009 and is more valuable to collectors, if you have this coin dated 2009, then you have found it and it could sell for £250+.”
