A 14-year-old boy went missing on Sunday night while swimming in the River Mersey with friends, as emergency services including police, coastguard and ambulance crews continue looking

A huge search has been launched for a 14-year-old boy who vanished while swimming in the River Mersey at the weekend.

The as of yet unnamed teenager had been with friends when they became separated on Sunday evening. Emergency services, including he coastguard and North West Ambulance Service, were scrambled but unable to find him as the sun went down.

The search continues this morning. A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm emergency services are responding to an incident in Waterloo this evening, Sunday, 30 June.

“Just after 7pm emergency services received a report of a concern for safety of a 14-year-old boy who had gone swimming in the River Mersey , near to the radar tower with a group of friends. His friends had come out of the river but had become separated from him and he has not been seen since.

“The incident is ongoing and Crosby beach near to the radar tower has been cordoned off. We are asking people to avoid the area at this time, whilst the emergency services, including the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service, continue searching for the missing boy.”

Sefton Council also pleaded with people to avoid the area as the emergency services looked for the lad last night.

A coastguard plane was spotted flying over the water this morning as the search for the missing boy continued at first light.

Several people online shared their own hopes he is found safe and well. One said: “Thoughts are with his family , I hope he is found.” Another added: “This is so heartbreaking I hope they find him safe. Another added: “Hope he found, this is heartbreaking.”
