New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has completed his first pre-match press conference as he looks to get his tenure with the Red Devils off to a winning start at Ipswich on Sunday
Ruben Amorim insists he is “the right man at the right time” to make Manchester United a major force once again.
Amorim faced the media for the first time as United boss today, ahead of his first game in charge, away to Ipswich on Sunday.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss cut an assured figure as he outlined his vision for United and said he is convinced he is the right man to save the fallen giants – despite referring to himself as a “dreamer”.
The 39-year-old is the sixth permanent United manager since SIr Alex Feguson retired in 2013, the last time the Red Devils lifted the Premier League title.
“Call me naïve, but I believe I am the right guy at the right time,” said Amorim. “I truly believe I am the right guy.
“I am a little bit of a dreamer and I believe in myself and I believe in the club. I think we have the same idea, the same mindset and that can help. I truly believe in the players, also. I think we have room to improve and I want to try new things.
“You guys think it is not possible, I think it’s possible. We have space to grow as a team. I think we have to improve in a lot of areas, the understanding of the game, it’s a different way of playing and we are changing in the middle of the season.
“I think we have to improve the physical aspect of the team. I don’t know how long it will take, but I know if you are at Manchester United you have to win games, so I will not tell you I need a lot of time. It’s a great league, the strongest in the world, and we have to improve a lot. We have to win games and then to win titles.
“If you want to speak about the team, I think we lose the ball too often and we have to be better at running back. I think that is clear to everyone and I think we have to be better on the details. We have to improve on the small things. In the small things, I think I can help a lot.”
Amorirm visited United in 2018 for an internship, when he was starting out in management, and was given advice by Jose Mourinho, whom he revealed sent him a good luck message.
“He sent me a message,” said Amorim. “He said welcome to the club, he said it’s a big club and in that respect he’s correct. But a lot of things change, we are in a different building now, we are building a new one. I’m a different guy and I hope to teach something to my players. The club is still big, it is still the best in England and we want to win.
“For all the Portuguese coaches, he showed we can be the best in the world. It’s a small country, but I am different from Mourinho. You look at Mourinho and think he can be everywhere. He was European champion and I am not. Football these days is different and I think I am the right person for this moment, I am a young guy.”
