Health experts have warned about the dangers high blood pressure, which has previously been called a silent killer, and affects more than one in four Brits, including some that don’t even know they’re at risk
Experts have shared a warning about a ‘silent killer’ health condition that affects one in four people.
Health specialists at British Heart Foundation have shared a warning about the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms of high blood pressure. It’s particularly important to be aware of the risks, as ‘many people with high blood pressure feel fine’ and may not realise that there’s a problem.
The health experts explained that: “High blood pressure rarely has noticeable symptoms.” But added that there are six signs that it’s a good idea to look out for.
What are the signs of high blood pressure?
The signs of high blood pressure include:
-
Blurred vision
-
Nosebleeds
-
Shortness of breath
-
Chest pain
-
Dizziness
-
Headaches
The health experts also explain that high blood pressure affects more than one in four people in the UK, but warn that ‘many will not know they have it’. They explain that most people who have high blood pressure tend to ‘feel fine’.
Because the symptoms of high blood pressure are not always that easy to spot, British Heart Foundation recommends that everyone should have their ‘blood pressure checked regularly’. It added that, every ‘healthy adult over 40’ should be getting their blood pressure checked ‘at least once every five years’.
However, it also warned that anyone who has at an elevated risk of high blood pressure, should have it checked at least once a year. The health experts explain that you can get your blood pressure checked at your GP surgery, at some pharmacies, and even in some workplaces.
They also add that, anyone ‘aged 40-74’ can get a free NHS health check in England, with similar health schemes available in other parts of the UK as well.
