A lifestyle expert has shared a ‘mind-blowing’ hack to remove scratches from wooden floors and surfaces around the home – and you’ll be surprised by what you’ll need for the job

A home expert has revealed a clever hack for clearing away scratches from wooden surfaces – using a kitchen staple you’d never suspect.

Carla (@locationhouseofbeau) took to TikTok to share her astonishment at the simple method, exclaiming: “Actual mind blown! Did you know about this hack? Have I been living under a rock all this time?” In the video, she showcased her elegant living room, which is undergoing an extensive ongoing renovation project.

“We have exposed wooden floorboards throughout our home,” Carla explained. “Some of it is engineered, some of it is original.” She then shared a recent mishap from the kitchen, kitted out with charcoal units and a brick stove backdrop.

“I absolutely love it, but last week I accidentally scratched my kitchen floor when I pulled out the cooker. Then I was eating my yoghurt with my walnuts and I thought, ‘Oh my god,’ I’m sure I’ve heard walnuts get rid of scratches in wood.”

Taking a gamble, Carla filmed herself earnestly rubbing a walnut into the floor’s wounds, and lo and behold, “It worked a treat,” she rejoiced. She then set to work tackling other blemishes.

“I’ve used them on a big sofa dent, I’ve used it on tiny little scratches in the playroom and it looks like new,” she detailed. “There’s a big one [scratch] in my daughter’s room where the rug has been and it worked a treat on that one. So next time you get a scratch on your wood, don’t panic and just crack open the walnuts. My little mind was actually blown each time it worked!”

“I need to know the logic/science behind this because it feels like witchcraft,” one of her 71,000 followers responded in amazement. “This is an insane hack, running to Sainsbury’s for some walnuts tomorrow,” quipped a second.

“Woah WHAT omg that’s amazing I’ve never heard of that,” exclaimed a third TikTok user. “I’m a cleaner and this will definitely help.” A fourth added in astonishment: Thank you! My floors are 83 years old and I have a few scratches, I also have a walnut tree in my backyard!”

Mainland Furniture explains the science behind this trick, adding: “This walnut hack works because walnuts produce a natural oil that can conceal visible scratches. It also works for deeper scratches as the walnut meat can fill in the gaps of the scratch.”

Meanwhile, Handle King adds: “The oil from the walnut goes into the scratch and recolours it, simple. This method of repairing wood scratches is best suited to light wood scratches.”
