Bees attack ‘beer truck looters’ in Darnall, South Africa

Looters attempting to strip an overturned lorry of its huge haul of beer ran for cover when they were attacked by a swarm of bees.

Police were called to the scene where the large vehicle had come off the road for an unknown reason. Looters had happened upon the site and were helping themselves to the alcohol within.

As police and onlookers arrived at the area on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast in South Africa, so did a swarm of bees who quickly descended on the group. Footage showed the group swatting the air and running away as the little insects started stinging those at the scene of the crash.

KwaDukuza municipality spokesperson Sifiso Zulu confirmed to local media the bees had targeted everyone who approached the scene. Footage of the incident was shared on social media.

One person said: “Well done mother nature, this is not a free for all.” Another added: “Maybe every goods truck should have a bee hive as a protective measure.” Another joked: “When people are no longer respecting law enforcement officers, bees will restore order.”

Last month dozens of students were left needing medical attention after a swarm of enraged bees attacked a school, as teachers and children fled in terror. At least 32 students were left needing treatment after the swarm descended upon Ramachandra Nodal High School, a government-run school near the Indian town of Kendrapara on the Bay of Bengal.

The school was reportedly holding an annual event at the time of the attack, with teachers and pupils in the grounds to attend the function when the bees attacked. The insects had established a two-foot-long colony in a tree on the school grounds but had remained peaceful until the day of the school event.

One teacher said the bees became agitated after a group of monkeys disturbed their hive. Following medical attention, Kishore Tarai, the inspector of the Derabish police station, confirmed that all individuals were in stable condition.
