The company says that all customers who have bought the item can return it to the store they bought it from for a full refund, they do not need a receipt

Major supermarket chains including Tesco, Asda, Ocado, and Morrisons have issued a product recall for a cupboard staple as it could make people ill.

The Food Standards Agency has issued an alert over AB World Foods recalling 160g Al’Fez Natural Tahini due to possible salmonella contamination. If consumed, the product could cause people to develop diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps and the symptoms can last up to seven days. Salmonella is not typically life-threatening, but severe cases may lead to hospitalisation.

The affected product weighs 160g, has best-before dates between June 2025 and August 2025, and has the following batch codes:

  • 3355
  • 4004
  • 4023
  • 4024
  • 4039
  • 4040

All stores selling the tahini product will display point of sale notices explaining why the tahini is being recalled. The company says that all customers who have bought the item can return it to the store they bought it from for a full refund, they do not need a receipt. The product costs between £1.80 and £3 across supermarket stores. Customers who bought the spread online are urged to contact the Al’Fez service team on 0800 0195 617 or consumer.services@abworldfoods.com.

What are recall notices?

Products can be recalled for a range of different reasons including safety – if a product displays risks for the customer – or quality – when the product isn’t working as it should be. The Food Standards Agency is in charge of issuing alerts when there is a problem with a food product. The product can either be “withdrawn” which is where is it taken off the shelves or “recalled” which is when customers are asked to return it.

Food products need to be recalled if they are found to have been contaminated with pathogens that could cause food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been found in the product due to manufacturing faults. Food items also need to be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
