Toastie makers can be an annoyance when it comes to cleaning – but this simple hack which involves using one common household item will save you time and effort

Toastie lovers will be aware of the pain of cleaning up after making a delicious cheesy sandwich – when ingredients have spilled out and stuck to the appliance.

But now, a lifestyle guru on TikTok shared a genius tip for keeping your toastie maker spotless using just one common household item. User Major Mum Hacks (@majormumhacks) revealed the trick in a video to her 232,000 followers.

“Toastie makers are a nightmare to clean, so this hack will save you from doing that,” she wrote in her clip’s caption. “It keeps all the juices inside the baking paper; there isn’t a risk of fire because there’s no flame, unlike a toaster.”

The footage saw Major Mum Hacks begin by placing a folded sheet of greaseproof baking paper on the bottom plate of the toastie maker. “Believe it or not, this toastie maker is two-years-old and look how clean it is just by doing this hack,” she revealed.

She then inserted her sandwich inside the paper into the machine and closed it to heat up. Once ready, Major Mum Hacks removed her now-toasted sandwich, showing that excess cheese had been caught in the paper, avoiding any spillage.

“Genius!” praised one follower declared. “So many people saying waste of paper. I’d re-use. Life is too short for cleaning!” A second TikTok user was clearly grateful, penning: “Omg life saver – my toastie machine just destroys my toastie. Hopefully this works.”

And a third praised: “Mind-blown. Would never have occurred to me. As I also threw one away as had cheese/beans in places I couldn’t get to so burnt. If I get another I will do this! Thanks.”

Despite the clever hack, other TikTok users weren’t as impressed and admitted they’d prefer stick to their traditional methods. “I like my toastie to look toasted,” one critic commented sarcastically. “Yes it’s lovely and clean but that’s not its job. Also you just been wasting time and money make a toastie that’s not toasted.”

Another person chimed in: “Butter each side and then wipes down with a cloth. Just a waste of baking paper otherwise.” And a third suggested: “Or just wipe down with a damp cloth after you’re done. A lot of them have removable plates.”
