However, timing is crucial when it comes to avocados as they need to be perfectly ripe to reach their full flavour potential. A too-hard avocado can be a let down and tough to eat, while an overripe one results in brown or bruised flesh and a distinctly mushy texture.
One TikTok hack is helping Brits determine the ripeness of their avocado without even having to break the skin or give it a squeeze at the supermarket.

A TikTok account named MummyLifeSquad has posted a video suggesting that there’s no need to cut or even squeeze your avocado to check if it’s ready to eat.
In the short video, the content creator explains that you can judge the avocado’s ripeness by simply pinching off the cap (the small stem at the top).
Picking off the top and checking out the colour, she said: “If it’s white then it’s rotten.” She then sliced the avocado in half to reveal the inside, which was indeed rotten, reports the Express.
If the cap is hard to remove or exposes brown or blackened flesh underneath, the avocado is likely overripe and about to turn brown and mushy. If the cap comes off easily and reveals bright green flesh underneath, the avocado is probably ripe.
Many of her followers found the idea intriguing, while some already use this technique to peek inside their avocados.
One thrilled fan commented: “Wow! I didn’t know that and I just used one, and guess what, it was all right – thanks!”
However, a second chimed in with an advisory note, adding: “This is 100 percent correct but it also lets air in which makes them go bad fast.”
In general, the consensus among followers was that whilst this trick might be useful, it’s still crucial to examine the fruit’s overall texture and colour to be sure.
